i haven't red the whole thread and don't know if you have finished talking about Grotesque, but i must say I have just watched it and feel like giving my opinion.

BRUTAL, I mean, i am relatively new to this whole gore scene. I have always liked gory, exploitation films, but I was never really into that, i am not a big scholar of the subject. As of early twentys, I am starting to get deeper in the whole thing, although i have been a film-lover since the dawn of time.

however, i think i am in conditions to say this a genre's masterpiece. Well, OK, not a masterpiece by far, but you got the point. It has all the ingredientes a film has to include to make you realize how lucky you are for not being in the victim's shows.

A PAINT IN THE ASS, and I really liked that kind-of-mental-torture the guy implemented (making the asians believe the whole thing was over)

sorry about my english, i'm from arg

Reviews: Imagine 2010: LIFE AND DEATH OF A PORNO GANG Review

wayfarer 27th August 2010 09:25 AM

I read a review of ASM today and realised that sometimes there is no point into going into a debate on some topics, on the internet nowadays. It was no bolt out of the blue revelation. Sometimes, I articulate an opinion knowing full well it will be shot down in flames by somebody, that's the nature of the beast. But when reviewers clearly want to be noticed because they think that a "hardcore" movie is cool then I despair.

The reviewer spent more time justifying reasons for watching the movie in the first place than actually reviewing the movie. An example of the sort of pride this reviewer had in seeing the movie was that people he knew had cried just by hearing about the content, without watching it. Bizarre and not a only little bit creepy.

I'm no prude when it comes to extreme cinema or porn but I get bored when a director feels the need to film a movie just to push the envelope. As someone originally posted, this Director has skill and ASM just looks like a cry of "Hey, look at me" to Hollywood. ANY film that has the sort of scene in it, with babies is pandering to the potential serial killers amoungst us I reckon and I don't feel that it would restricting creativity to avoid letting this sort of footage in people's homes.

I never wanted to become the sort of person who says that a line whould be drawn in cinema but I make no apologies for saying that the line involves one scene in ASM.

Grotesque was a wildly offensive and bizarre pink film, I really enjoyed it.

A Serbian Film, on the other hand, I did not enjoy BUT I will probably own it as I'm one of those nerdy obsessive gorehound geeks that MUST own everything EEEEEEXTRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEMMMMMMMMEEEEE!!

...really...I will own it. I thought it was a well made and interesting film.

ASM will be shown uncut at a film festival in Vienna - so finally I will be able to see it!

Was it the oh-so subtle social satire that lured you in, dude??

Well the big problem is that the anti-censorship rhetoric works both ways and I've said this for years. In fact I often find those most likely to shoot someone down in flames - and call for their voice to be silenced - are those who, perversly, espout "anything goes" opinions on censorship.

It seems the choice is either Mary Whitehouse or Melonfarmers and both are flip sides of the same extreme - and both are also impossible to take seriously as a consequence.

I'm not opposed to A Serbian Film being shown in a cinema for adults over the age of 18. Although I abhor animal cruelty I wouldn't be against the old cannibal films screening in cinemas for over 18's. But I do think some material in there would be used disingenuously by others - and the director was a giant douche for filming this crap in the first place (and unless he's really thick - and having met him I have my doubts - I don't think he couldn't have known this, making the proverbial "douche" factor even higher than usual).

Sadly, no. :) I was lured in by the promise of a hard-edged thriller with sex. I had no idea that it wouldn't be the kind of sex I enjoy.

...which is good hard kitten-shagging.

Grotesque was a cool movie, but again I was expecting a bit more from all the underground hype. The film shouldn't be banned though. :(

The ending made me laugh! How random was that!

UK folks might be interested to know that A Serbian Film will hit the cinemas here on 10th December 2010, minus over 4 minutes of footage to appease the BBFC:

A Serbian Film falls foul of UK censors

and our review of the film, by our Serbian reviewer Miloš Jovanović:
Srpski film (aka A Serbian Film)
