Grotesque (2009) vs Serbian Movie (2010) Archive Thread

I've read some pretty extreme things about the upcoming Japanese horror flick "Grotesque", which is getting a UK release in August.

If I believe only a portion of the buzz, this'll make recent "torture porn" look pale by comparison.

There will be the obligatory Austrian "Full Uncut" release, but the UK disc should be much cheaper and would certainly be of interest IF the uncut/cut status were confirmed.:o

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Grotesque-DV...5669809&sr=1-1

Pete 22nd June 2009 11:19 AM

It has'nt appeared on the BBFC site yet.

Angel 22nd June 2009 12:02 PM

Yes it will be interesting to see if it passes uncut. Does sound very extreme.

Almar@Cult Labs 22nd June 2009 12:27 PM

It's quite breath-taking - our client 4Digital is putting this out - not sure as yet about if it will be uncut.

Peter Neal 22nd June 2009 05:02 PM

Please, keep us posted on this one, Almar, because if only half of what I read about "Grotesque" is true, this will become a very close race with the BBFC indeed, as this is regarded as much stronger than "Ichi, the Killer"- which infamously lost 3 mins back then to the censors.
Anyway, even with minor cuts this movie will probably be a toughie to sit through.:woot:

Make Them Die Slowly 22nd June 2009 10:43 PM

I just watched the gore filled trailer to "Grotesque",certainly looks very strong but is there anything more to it than just gore, which I'm finding more and more boring these days.

Peter Neal 23rd June 2009 09:49 AM

Still haven't lost my appetite for gore, even though I'll be past my mid thirties this year.:jest:

Well, the descriptions of "Grotesque" mention that the acting is supposed to be very good and tense too- but I guess the gore will be the main attraction here.:o

Pete 23rd June 2009 09:56 AM

According to Amazon it has a 73 minute run time, must just be gore all the way through.

Almar@Cult Labs 23rd June 2009 10:00 AM

It's pretty relentless I have to say - we'll get some clips going here once we know what's happening.

Pete 23rd June 2009 10:02 AM

Seeing as 4 Digital is one of your clinets is there any chance they will join Cult-Labs like Arrow?

Almar@Cult Labs 23rd June 2009 11:14 AM

I don't know - I'm up for more labels coming on board if they'll make themselves open to listening to input from you guys. :)

Angel 23rd June 2009 01:02 PM

If it's just a torture film on the lines of HOSTEL then it's unlikely to be cut here even if the violence is much stronger.

iluvdvds@Cult Labs 24th June 2009 12:33 PM

It sounds like a great film, with plenty of lovely gore! Look out for it in one of the future weekly comps! :)

Kyle 14th July 2009 12:37 AM

this film looks great, i read an awesome review for it in gorzone last month

The punters know what they want....;)

Angel 30th July 2009 05:49 AM

The release date has now been put back until September.

Peter Neal 30th July 2009 09:41 AM

Smells like BBFC trouble to me....

Angel 31st July 2009 05:15 PM

According to big Al over on the SGM site it does appear to have run into problems with the BBFC. I'm hoping to see this before they make their final decision, whatever that may be. But if it is true the film must be very extreme indeed, but even so none of the reviews I've read make any mention of sexual violence so I'm not sure what the problem is.

Almar@Cult Labs 31st July 2009 07:32 PM

Oh there's our old fave - nipple slicing!

Angel 31st July 2009 08:18 PM

Thanks Almar, I had forgotten you had seen it. Sounds like cuts will be a certainty then.

Almar@Cult Labs 31st July 2009 10:35 PM

Well I don't know but it pulls no punches!:fear:

Angel 18th August 2009 03:39 PM

And it has just been banned.

iluvdvds@Cult Labs 18th August 2009 03:44 PM

Angel just said it - it's been 'rejected'! Does that mean it needs to be cut or is it totally banned?

http://bbfc.co.uk/website/Classified...7?OpenDocument

vincenzo 18th August 2009 03:52 PM

It's been totally banned. The reasons for rejection normally take a while to appear but the BBFC will generally list them in detail as they did with Murder Set Pieces.

It must be pretty extreme for the BBFC to do this.

Angel 18th August 2009 03:54 PM

It is totally banned.

The film must have contained a huge amount of sexual or sexualised violence that was in breach of their guidelines and cutting would have meant there wouldn't have been anything worth releasing.

Angel 18th August 2009 03:57 PM

Sorry Vince but I have done it again.

Yes it will be interesting to see the BBFC's justification for the rejection which should appear shortly. It seems to have taken everyone by surprise.

It could only be unacceptable levels of sexual violence.

I'm looking forward to seeing it now just to see if the BBFC are on the level.

Pete 18th August 2009 04:06 PM

I wasn't really bothered about this film but now i want to see it. Thanks BBFC.

No worries Angel. Better to have two similar than none at all. :coolblue:

I think we mentioned in an earlier post that it had been at the BBFC for quite a long time. This didn't bode well at all. I haven't seen it as yet either (though I will too) but it does sound a bit OTT. Embodiment Of Evil seemed to spend a while with them as well, though it ended up intact in the end (only just by the sound of it).

Angel 18th August 2009 04:13 PM

Yes I think we're all going to see it now.

This is the 4th film to be rejected on the grounds of sexual violence in just 2 years. I am just assuming it is sexual violence because after all it can't be anything else.

I am a bit surprised myself at the moment although I still need to see it. I thought it may have passed with minimal cuts in the end judging by the reviews I have read.

Pete 18th August 2009 04:16 PM

It only runs for 74 mins so maybe cutting it would have been pointless.

What are the other film's that have been rejected?

Murder Set Pieces, Texas Vib Massacre and ........

Angel 18th August 2009 04:19 PM

This one, Loops

Pete 18th August 2009 04:20 PM

Thanks Angel.:)

Angel 18th August 2009 04:22 PM

Strangely on the CA it just says "contains very strong gory violence". No mention of sexual violence. Well we will just have to see what the BBFC have to say.

Kyle 18th August 2009 04:38 PM

i watched it last night and its a great film :)

vincenzo 18th August 2009 04:42 PM

Why do you think the BBFC rejected it, bitchslicer?

Kyle 18th August 2009 05:50 PM

have they? i have it on pre order :tsk:

this may contain some spoilers:tape:

there may be a few reasons i think scenes included are:

a girl getting her nipples cut of with scissors
a guy masturbating a girl who after a while seems to enjoy it
a guy getting his genitals nailed and cut off
also the whole film is the torture of these two people, only a few small scenes are not really

most of the other scenes were very gruesome but not anything that hasn't been passed before!

Peter Neal 18th August 2009 07:43 PM

After having just watched "Embodiment of Evil"- which surely would have suffered the very same fate just a few years back- this news came as a minor shock to me, as I was expecting minor cuts to "Grotesque" in the worst case....:pout:
Ah well, another title becoming an instant import must-buy for many fans due to a censorship body's rejection. We've been there before...:loco:

Angel 18th August 2009 07:58 PM

Yes Peter, I also watched Embodiment recently, and there's no doubt just 5/6years ago it would have been subjected to a number of cuts.

Another very violent torture film was SCAR passed uncut by the BBFC. Again going back a few years it would have been cut for sure.

Grotesque must have been very extreme to have been rejected.

It will be interesting to see our comments when we all get around to seeing it.

MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

I think the main reason its been rejected is that the violence/torture is committed by the protagonist in order to fulfill a sexual desire.
