Fright Night Remake (2011)

Well another cult classic gets an unwanted makeover, this time it is 1985's Fright Night. In the remake, Charley Brewster is played by Anton Yelchin (Chekov from the recent Star Trek). Toni Collette plays his disbelieving mum who struggles to believe that her charming next door neighbour - Jerry Dandridge is in fact a bloodthirsty vampire...
Imogen Poots is Amy and Evil Ed is reprised by Christopher Mintz-Plasse.
However, as a plus Jerry Dandridge is played by the ever redoubtable Colin Farrell who has the capability to pull this role off.
And wait for it - David Tennant no less is Peter Vincent, this time an extravagant stage magician who aids Charley in his struggle with Dandridge...

Frankly my initial reaction to this sequel was pass the sick bag. However, with Farrell as Dandridge and Tennant as a very different Peter Vincent, maybe just maybe there is hope for it yet. In the meantime check out the new look Peter Vincent:

im intrigued by this remake, but i'd rather see the original and the sequel get a special edition release instead....it does have an interesting cast though....

I have absolutely zero interest in seeing this. The only good thing to come out of this will be a special edition of the original (hopefully).

A glimmer of hope for the remake comes from Christopher Mintz Plasse who says that the film will be made with an R Rating in mind and that they will not be heading for Twilight territory...
Another actor - James Franco says "I've seen some footage of the bloodier scenes, and I personally am a huge horror fan. What I like about this movie is that they're really going for it," he said of the film's hard-R rating. "It is disgusting, but not in, like, a 'Saw'-type way, where it's overly horror-porn that's almost unnecessary. This one, they're definitely going for it. It's a hard R."

Add to that the remake is actually being made by the original film director's own production company...

We shall see.

Which was pretty much my initial reaction. However, the casting, the intention to stay away from the PG13 territory of Twilight etc, and this article re the script give me some small hope that it may still work out:

Time will doubtless tell though and yes I look forward to Sony releasing a great edition of the original on Blu-ray next year to tie in with this too. And unless we hear differently that is the best reason for this remake at present time.

Yeah that's the only good thing about remakes these days is the DVD releases that tend to come with it.

I must admit whereas the remake does sound interesting and the gory goods may well be delivered, i still don't hold out much hope for this latest Hollywood horror makeover in the face of how enjoyable the original FN remains. The film was great then and it's still great now.

Also, while i have no problem with David Tennant i can't imagine Roddy McDowall's brilliant performance as the initial Peter Vincent being bettered.

Chris Sarandon was impressive as the first Jerry Dandridge too and it'd be nice to see the actor in a cameo appearance.
I also wonder if Dandridge's similarly sinister housemate Billy Cole will feature in the new FN?

Roll on the sp. ed. of the original and it can't come quick enough imo!:)

I really cant imagine this being any good with Colin Farrell, i dont think ive seen a decent movie with him or his one accent in.

No real opinion on the other actors but like splattereddragon im not sure if David Tennant will be able to capture the magic of Roddy McDowell.

Saying that if it gets a cinematic release i'll still probably be there to check it out complaining the whole way through lol
