I didn't like it, but reckon it is worth watching to see how James Wan is developing as a film-maker. This is his most accomplished piece so far.

Good to see that people can appreciate effort and the ambition to step out of comfort zones even if they don't like the movie. I'm not a Saw fan (the first movie being the exception) but I really enjoyed Insidious. Obviously, it's a massive step away for torture-porn and hard gore, but it has some eccentricities and quirky characters that make it a little different from the usual haunting flick as well. One thing I like about a ghost movie is that they provide lulls for a little humour. The supernatural nature of films like this mean filmmakers can get away with offbeat acting and jokes in a way that a really harsh, nasty movie can't. Look at it this way, when jolly Country and Western and bumbling cops enter Last House on the Left, it induces cinematic whiplash (which can be entertaining on it's own terms of course) whereas the humour and warmth in Poltergeist feels natural and unforced. |

Wan only directed the first Saw which tbh was not "torture porn" so he is not a torture porn director at all. First saw was more of a thriller then traditional horror. So the whole "from director of saw is wrong marketing as people will expect gore. Insidious shows how we growing as a director and its a very good achievement, many people did not like the 2nd half but I did not mind it as it was something different. Different is better then the usual same haunted house flicks. |

Wondering if it might suffer on the small screen in the corner, it's one of those where the reaction of the audience is great(I posted elsewhere that when I saw it two young girls exited the building less than half way thru shaking their heads, too scared to watch the rest) now it's no Exorcist mind, but a horror fan should watch it(maybe with a group of friends with the lights out) to replicate that buzz. Easily a fave.

I enjoyed this film. It's definitely worth a rental, at least.

If I had to pick one thing I really liked, it would be the paranormal investigators. Mainstream horror suffers from a dearth of memorable characters outside of the killers and fiends. The straight men/victims can be so cookie-cutter. |

If they had been brutally done in by a cookie cutter we would be in agreement. Ahem.
