Well, I gave the unrated R1 DVD of the remake a spin earlier this evening - what a woeful piece of charmless filmmaking. It misses entirely the point of the original, with Jennifer setting up Saw-like traps for the victims. Instead of there being some passion to her revenge it becomes more of an exercise in elaborate death scenes. Too much planning on her part which ultimately stretches credibility. The original is far superior, the remake is soulless and without a philosophy. Totally pointless.

Gotta disagree with you Daemonia. Director wanted it to be a stand alone movie but based on the events of the original. The director of the original even enjoyed it. |

Lets face it love or hate I S O Y G and likes of L H O T L. now that the remakes are more commercialised and given the so called Hollywood treatment 1 thing i will give them credit for they havent exactly been toned down.. i wasnt expecting them to be violent graphic etc, i was expecting them to be quite tame and lame to be honest...

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one, Nekro. I hated it, thought it was rubbish. Although it's more graphic in some ways than the original, the tone of the film is completely different, it's very uneven and is almost like an entry in the Saw franchise. The original at least was trying to make a point, the remake is just there for dubious entertainment. It makes no point, it has no heart. It's listless and tedious and utterly devoid of any soul.

Interesting you should mention the two cops in Last House on the Left as I feel that the slightly uneven tone with their comedic interludes adds to the violence and disquieting nature of the film, something that was extremely lacking from the remake that was, in my view, distasteful.

I gotta disagree with the cops, the movie is meant to be a brutal and harsh flick so adding comedy ruins it as it just dont go with that type of movie. Brain Dead is the type of movie that can be brutally violent and yet funny as the funny parts dont take any atmosphere away while in movies like Last House it needs the atmosphere to be left as it is so you dont get taken away from the movie. |

I actually really liked the remake. There were elements I didn't appreciate, such as Jennifer's prolonged absence, but on the whole it made a nice companion piece to the original.

At least the original was believable - so much so that it's that what offends people. It's plausible. They start with a bit of teasing, then some harrassment and it's a gradual and slow escalation of events. Then there's the pivotal midway point where Jennifer is seen pondering her future. Does she succumb to the pain and humiliation and become a broken person, or does she become strong - stronger than the men who abused her? Strong enough to take vicious revenge. But ultimately there's no winners, it's hard to cheer Jennifer on, as she becomes as violent and heartless as her abusers. But what does the remake offer us? Jennifer is raped and abused, disappears, then re-appears as a tough female (who couldn't even fix her plumbing before) capable of setting up elaborate traps for her tormentors. But there's no philosophy to the film, no reasoning, and shallow on logic. It trades purely on the violence and vicousness of the material without giving the viewer something to think about. It doesn't come across as an anti-rape film but as a piece of horrible filmmaking that invites us to share in her degradation for no other reason than to validate her vicious revenge. It doesn't address the complexities of the issue of how to deal with the matter of having been humiliated so thoroughly. Is revenge in this context justified? Instead of challenging the viewer it ends up as just another soulless torture horror film that is ultimately worthless and pointless. Just my opinion, I guess you could say I didn't like it.
