Maniac Remake 2012

this is absolutely true and it's effing absured. Elijah Wood has been cast as Frank in the remake of this nasty. Elijah Wood, WTF!

Elijah Wood is a Serial Killer in Maniac Remake | WorstPreviews.com

Stephen@Cult Labs 5th November 2011 12:14 PM

Heard about this yesterday. Had to make sure it wasn't April 1st!

bizarre_eye@Cult Labs 5th November 2011 12:14 PM

I think a part of me just died inside.

platostotal 5th November 2011 12:49 PM

Why? Who? What?... I can't imagine how anyone in charge of anything could think this is a good idea, you can hear the execs from here "Okay, but no scalping, no gratuitous sleaze and nothing to upset the MPAA, maybe a PG13":lol: Only good that may come out of it would be Lustig getting a few quid.

iluvdvds@Cult Labs 5th November 2011 12:54 PM

I'm probably the only person in the world that quite likes this news! It could prove to be a very interesting and different take on the original rather than a copy-cat and (even more) pointless remake of Maniac. Elijah is a great actor and his role as the killer in Sin City was brilliant. I imagine it could be like Maniac but with a Norman Bates-like character.

I was just going to say he's great in Sin City so, while I'm not sure this remake will still work, I can imagine him doing a great job in the role

Demoncrat 5th November 2011 04:27 PM

with this news and the equally baffling thing i hear about matt damon playing liberace, its silly season i see....lawdy!!

keirarts 5th November 2011 05:16 PM

Proof if any where needed the hollywood execs are simply interested in these films noteriety. I bet this is NOTHING like the origional.

Which will be a good thing imo.

Demdike@Cult Labs 5th November 2011 06:19 PM

Maniac's not exactly a good film, but surely after the flops of Fright Night, Straw Dogs and The Thing, studios would leave remakes alone.

Then why remake it?

Surely theres plenty of screenplays floating around based on origional story's with the potential to be the next horror classic.

Like it or not their selling the maniac remake of the noteriety of the origional.
This means either

1.People have no clue the origional existed.
2.They hated the origional and the prospect of seeing a remake leaves them cold
3.They love the origional and have certain expectations of what the film will be like that never materialises.

Hell, its the director of p2, so it might be even grislier!

Either way I doubt Bill lustig objects considering the cash he'll be paid!

An accurate comment to be sure and one i agree with.

Looks like i'll be sticking with Lustig's legendary and loathed original.:)

Slippery Jack 6th November 2011 09:25 AM

Still haven't seen the original

Skipped past the old Anchor Bay disc in That's Entertainment the other day too :tsk: . . .

Go for an import release of Maniac as ABUK's DVD is snipped.;)

nekromantik 6th November 2011 11:33 AM

Kyle makes a good point about EJ.
He was good in Sin City so maybe it can work but at the same time this movie could suck so bad even with the best actor for the job in it.

understandable that people liked him in Sin City, but he still looks like a seven year old and has no where near the sleaze and creepiness of Joe Spinell, which for me made the film.

Slippery Jack 6th November 2011 07:39 PM

So... who we gonna cast instead?

I was thinking Doug Hutchinson, he's great in sweaty, creepy, psycho roles (The X Files, Green Mile...) - though I recently remember reading he has turned into some kind of car crash reality tv star or something :tsk: . . .

Or maybe Joey Pants! I haven't seen him in anything in ages (probably not since The Sopranos)!

Nah, there's only so many times you can die inside with all these remakes. I think I was done around the time of The Wicker Man. The novelty of being outraged has long worn off - now it's a minor shrug and carry on with my business . . .

I died inside when I sat through the original MANIAC. A terrible film. The remake can only be an improvement imo.

Paul@TheOverlook 6th November 2011 09:31 PM

This news is hilarious! The original is an exploitation classic.

Doug Hutchinson was recently in the final season of Lost and in Punisher War Zone, He would make a great Psycho, he reminds me of Brad Dourif.

Joey Pants is the man, he can play sleazy very well but psychotic im not sure. For me if they want a young guy playing Frank who has the right intensity then i would have gone for Ben Foster or Ryan Gosling. At least they don't look exactly like they did in 1994.

Demdike@Cult Labs 6th November 2011 10:12 PM

Edward Norton would be a good star name for the role.

Surprised its not Nic Cage though, he seems to do any old shit nowadays.

saw this on the cover of the Daily Record....Greg Hemphill (Jack in Still Game etc) to star as Lord Summerisle in a musical version of TWM (...yes, i know it IS a musical ish....) as i say all bets are off!

Maniac is a great film, far more unsettling than i ever thought it would be....see, the thing is its not compulsory to watch these things thank christ...

and Wood? please. anyone seen Green Street?? sit through this shit and tell me he can act.

Agreed and i really can't see Wood holding his own compared to Spinell. The former's too much of a 'pretty boy' type imo and not my kind of actor at all.:tsk:

Peter Neal 20th November 2011 07:51 AM

I'm actually looking quite forward to this, not only because "Maniac" is one of my all time faves , but because of the "French Connection" which should ensure that this doesn't drift into too tame and sanitised territory- even though we shouldn't expect quite the same amount of splattery delights as offered in the original, which doesn't neccesarily have to be such a bad thing, if the atmosphere is right. :pop2:

@Pete: I really get a feeling you should watch the masterpiece that is "Maniac" very closely again................................

Have you seen Edward Furlong lately? He looks rough as **** and looks decidedly sleazy and creepy, he'd be ideal for this role.

But Elijah Wood? Hardly an intimidating figure of a man. Still, let's wait and see how it turns out. The original is, as Paul said, an exploitation classic. Not sure why Lustig has greenlighted this, but I hope that it means that if he gets a sizeable cut of the profits that it may allow Blue Underground to purchase some new titles and remaster some older ones.

Just think, Pete, this film you hate might indirectly be responsible for getting some Franco on BD. ;)

Baseball Fury 30th November 2011 12:03 PM

The problem with Furlong is that he's a skinny, washed out little skaghead, so he wouldn't be able to fight his way out of a paper bag, let alone restrain and beat people to death!

Not so skinny these days, though. But physical frame aside, he meets the rqeuirements of looking sweaty and sleazy with an unbalanced mind.

Well, whatever the case may be, I think Wood is the wrong choice. But I'm judging without seeing, so let's wait and see.

Baseball Fury 30th November 2011 01:51 PM

I think it should've been someone older personally, Phillip Seymour Hoffman-esque.

Meh! just looked at the trailer and I'll give it a go! looks downbeat and grimey! Hey, why do maniac's have to look like Joe Spinell, why not the boy next door?

Wes 27th October 2012 08:23 AM

Just saw the trailer. This could go either way, but hopefully William Lustig will get some sort of kick-back from the film and hopefully put Blue Underground back on a releasin' basis...

(ad before the trailer is for Wrong Turn 5. They made a 3rd one ? A 4th one ??)
