I've been following this thread with interest, as it's curious seeing the mixed reactions to this grim Giallo from Fulci. Also, let's not rewrite history, this was never officially designated a 'video nasty', it never even came out on pre-cert video over here. Yes, Ferman had it escorted out of the country, I think the reasoning was to get it off mainland Britain before anyone could pirate it and distribute it on the black market. Rejected by the BBFC certainly, but never a 'nasty'.
I personally think it's a great film, very bleak and uncompromising, Fulci at his very best. It presents a dim view on New York City for sure, giving the impression it's full of perverts, murderers and sleazy cops - but I like that about it. It's thoroughly unapologetic and delivers nastiness in spades.
