JAWS was also an A and again now a 12 - i don't know if this has something to do with the extras, extra scenes etc
SWEENEY 2 was given the old AA but since released on video and now dvd its an 18

I can see you're no longer with us James but the answer to all this is really quite simple...When an older film is re-classified it will be subject to the standards currently operating. What may have been acceptable with an A or AA may not necessarily be acceptable today. Though mostly films are downgraded.
