The hallway sequence in Mario Bava's
Shock is also brilliant for jolting the viewer imo but i think this spine tingling scene is grossly underrated especially by mainstream horror fans. I reckon us veteran devotees know better though.
You just never see it coming because like most good vintage jump moments there's no indication something scary is going to occur. It just happens.
