Strangely, I don't like to compare the Batman film series, treating each director's output as separate entities, so the films from 1943, 1949 and 1966 are very much products of their time.
The Tim Burton films are extremely good (I think the first one is better than the sequel) but they are better for the Gothic tone than the overly camp Joel Schumacher ones which followed. I consider the Christopher Nolan trilogy a modern masterpiece of cinema – The Dark Knight Rises was an unforgettable IMAX experience.
There are also the animated films, with Mask of the Phantasm and the two-part The Dark Knight Returns films being highlights.
