The Classic Who DVD Guide

#1: The Five Doctors

'The Five Doctors' was the first Classic Who DVD to be released

Release date - November 1999

Back cover info:
"Someone is taking the Doctor's past selves out of time and space, placing them in a vast wilderness — a battle arena with a sinister tower at its centre.

As the various incarnations of the Doctor join forces they learn they are in the Death Zone on their home world of Gallifrey, fighting Daleks, Cybermen, Yeti, the Master... and a devious Time Lord traitor who is using the Doctor and his companions in order to discover the ancient secrets of Rassilon, the first and most powerful ruler of Gallifrey.

The Five Doctors was originally broadcast on 25 November 1983, to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Doctor Who. This new version of the story features extended scenes, previously unseen sequences, new visual effects and a Dolby 5.1 soundtrack. Not intended to replace the original edition of this story, this is an alternative version which uses state-of-the-art technology to embellish and enlarge one of the greatest Doctor Who stories ever"

Special features:
Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack
Music-only option

*Note - Although this is described as being a 'Special Edition' on the front cover, it's actually a bare-bones DVD — the title refers to the fact that this is the 1995 special edition of the story, containing extended scenes and new visual effects and NOT the original 1983 broadcast version. However, the story was later re-released as a 2-disc 25th anniversary edition

Release date March 2008

Back cover info:
"The Doctor's past incarnations are being snatched out of time and transported to the Death Zone on Gallifrey, where they are reunited with some old friends and pitted against their deadliest enemies in the Game of Rassilon. Someone is manipulating the Doctor and his companions in order to claim the most ancient and powerful secret of the Time Lords... but can they survive the challenges and uncover the traitor before it is too late?

This 25th Anniversary DVD set contains the original 1983 TV version of The Five Doctors, plus the Special Edition from 1995 featuring new effects and extended scenes"
