A lot of effects companies go out of business. The Oscar winning effects team that worked on life of pi filed for banrupcy at the same time they won the award. It's like the video games industry. A lot of people think it's a gateway to wealth when a lot of it isn't especially well paid.
Even if you go back to the days of practical effects. For every stan Winston you had dozens of others making very little. Even Tom Savini didn't make a fortune In the industry. It's one of the reasons he continued doing festivals.
