i felt the opening episode was a bit 'same as same as' the Capaldi era. the story was a derivative Predator-lite scenario, the new companion characters were all over-played, Jodie was dialled up to 11 (hopefully that will change once the re-generation is complete), the changes in tone - e.g. cheery knockabout to killing off nice Grandads for no reason - was jarring, the guy playing the alien's target was hopelessly useless as an actor, and my usual complaint about nu-who is it all seems unnecessarily rushed.
i wish the writers would understand we don't need a flippant remark every two minutes to keep us interested and that it doesn't have to be so lightweight to keep a family audience. also the best stories are the ones where the Doctor doesn't always think he/she will win.
hopefully things will improve as the new writers and actors settle in. the biggest plus point for me is that the incidental music has improved out of sight of the last series.
