Burt Reynolds

Old Burt Reynolds made some great action films in his day too:-
Hooper
Sharky's Machine (One of my favourites)
Malone (1987) Where's the dvd ?.Would be uncut too now restoring an earclap (In the BBC 1 screenings !)
Smokey & The Bandit (Great fun the first two)
Deliverance (Boy those Mountain Men still give me the creeps !)
Shamus
Gator
White Lightning
Navajo Joe (Enjoyable Spaghetti western)
100 Rifles (great Jerry Goldsmith score reused for The Last Hard Men)

Squeel like a pig!

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 7th July 2009 07:04 PM

CITY HEAT,DELIVERANCE and SHARKY'S MACHINE are my faves.

Stephen@Cult Labs 7th July 2009 07:19 PM

I can't stop watching the opening credits to Gator on youtube.Jerry Reed singing the ballad of Gator Mclusky......classic :)

vincenzo 7th July 2009 09:09 PM

Deliverance and Sharky's Machine (with its awesome soundtrack) are two of my Reynolds favourites. I also still like the original Mean Machine (The Longest Yard).

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 7th July 2009 10:47 PM

It's sad that Reynolds was reduced to advertising specs.
His turn in BOOGIE NIGHTS was also superb.

Pete 8th July 2009 09:13 AM

Havent seen that many of his films but i do like;

Navjo Joe
Cannonball Run
Deliverence
Bean
The Longest Yard ( both )

vincenzo 8th July 2009 11:08 AM

I sat through a diabolical mess of his called Stroker Ace once. One of the worst films I've ever seen. :ack:

Aurora75 7th March 2010 10:49 AM

Hooper is great, made me want to be a stuntman when i was little (that and The Fall Guy TV series!)

The man has great charisma and is larger than life on screen. Deliverance is obviously a classic but I like him best in his roles as 'Smokey and the Bandit' and 'Cannonball Run' I think.

He was made for the 80's!

Agreed, was inspired casting for that role.

So do i and i've seen both films umpteen times.

Reynolds' just seems so at home behind the wheel in both the above classics.

I never thought much of SATB 2 but i love the third entry despite Burt's brief cameo at the climax.

TCR 2 isn't all that bad either imo.:)

vincenzo 14th March 2010 11:46 AM

Reynolds was good in Hustle too though it wasn't one of Aldrich's best.

Stephen@Cult Labs 14th March 2010 12:06 PM

One thing I would love to see some day is the original version of Smokey & The Bandit part 3.It was fiilmed as Smokey Is The Bandit and Featured Jackie Gleason playing Beauford T. Justice and The Bandit but they re-filmed most of it when they brought in Jerry Reed as Snowman/Bandit.It would be interesting to see.

Gojirosan 14th March 2010 12:14 PM

Burt was great when he turned up in My Name Is Earl too. I think sometimes the power of the personality of "Burt" overshadows what a varied and fine actor he can be.

vincenzo 14th March 2010 12:16 PM

Sharky's Machine is long overdue for an uncut UK release.

blindfold 23rd February 2012 11:17 AM

Has Reynolds ever been a good action star?

An interesting and intriguing concept to be sure. Personally, i love the third SATB entry as it stands and make no mistake, Gleason dominates this film from start to finish. The opening credits montage alone has me creased everytime, especially the OAP exercise class moment!

James Morton 26th February 2012 01:40 PM

only got DELIVERENCE w/Reynolds in and hes good the excellent film by Boorman
but the CANNONBALL RUN and SMOKEY films were shit
I saw THE MEAN MACHINE and HUSTLE and he was good in them
but hes not in the same league of course as Schwarzenegger as an action star!

The underrated MALONE is now out in Germany from Ascot Elite:).Uncut as it's the FSK 18 release and it will have the double ear-clap cut from the UK video by the BBFC intact.

Malone is such a badass film, you got Reynolds, Cliff Robertson and Hershal off of the Walking dead, a giant barn explosion and Reynold's blowing holes into people and not a hair is out of place. It's been on MGM-HD a few times. Will definitely get the blu as the only other release is the MGM ON Demand release that's about $25.

Disc came today & looks great, so the Blu Ray release should look even better.Nice original poster art on back of sleeve too minus the large FSK ratings.

Has anyone any opinions on White Lightning and Gator?

I don't know either film but both sound interesting.

Yeah they're pretty good. And Jerry Reed is his usual great self as the villain Bama McCall in Gator. The main title song, The Ballad of Gator McKlusky, sung by Reed is all kinds of awesome too.

Demdike@Cult Labs 6th July 2013 03:54 PM

Thanks Stephen. They are under a fiver each on Amazon so i think i'll pick them up. :)

I loved White Lightning, very cool film, I found Gator a little disappointing but still worth a punt.
