I don't know if it was just me but I was a bit dissapointed with the movie. Maybe it was all the hype it received. Don't get me wrong , I enjoyed it, but maybe I am a bit jaded now having seen thousands of Asian action movies over the last 3 decades.
Only my opinion though and I hope lots of people go to see this and it does great box-office.

I just got back from seeing it and I have to completely agree with every word you say, you took the words right out of mouth. Great but not as epic as I was lead to believe

What it needed (and I was hoping for) was a long single action shot. I was expecting the camera to follow Uko though a corridor for a few minutes with not a single cut. Oh well, only a trivial thing but overall I thought it could have done with less cuts as it started getting a bit too messy at times. Just my opinion though.

Still a great film and I'll definitely get the Blu to watch again and see if it grows on me more over time.

Everyone would have just moaned it was ripping off Old Boy then! I don't normally like fast, flashy post-MTV editing (drove me absolutely mental in Marvel Avengers Asemble, for example) but I thought it was done superbly well with an excellent sense of dynamics in The Raid. The editing impressed me greatly. You could still see the martial arts choreography even though there was fast cutting. I got the impression in Marvel Avengers Assemble that that fast cutting was there instead of choreography, as you couldn't see a bloody thing!

Okay, we made the trip.....

This year, the Avengers was the greatest Superhero movie in existance (to me)...

But the Raid.....is simply THE BEST ACTION MOVIE OF THIS YEAR!!!!!! It is Hard Boiled x10! I never found a moment where I wasn't moving in my seat....

I'm already lookin' forward to it's Blu-Ray release! Absolutely recommended!!!!!

There's an interesting article on the financial success of The Raid in this month's Sight & Sound (page 9), with a table of foreign action movies at the UK box office in which Gareth Evans' film is second to Kung-Fu Hustle (£1,320,910 gross), taking £805,399 after 10 days.

The article (by Charles Gant) ends saying "Momentum has virtually no chance of recouping hefty marketing costs from theatrical revenues, but is well-positioned to cash in on DVD." This is undoubtedly true as it's one I'll buy on BD when it's released – I'm sure I'm not alone.

Interesting you should mention Hard Boiled as, in the article, the guy from Momentum says how he saw the film as a mixture of eastern and western cinema, a little like Die Hard meets Hard Boiled.

That's understandable.. That is the same reaction that I would get seeing the newest Jackie Chan/Jet Li movie that have come out in the last 10 yrs or so except for Forbidden Kingdom.. I like that movie because it is a fantasy Martial arts movie, which is about the only thing I can tolerate when it comes to Martial Arts Movie this day... This movie though, is refreshing/and a bliss from the heavens because of two things: Iko Uwais/Gareth Evans=Silat=my hard earned money= AWESOME!!!!

I don't know about you guys but I think I am a little kung fued out!!!! I'm exhausted/ I need a break believe me I have every Dragon Dynasty/Tokyo Shock Shaw bros title.. Eventually I will get back to the Kung Fu crazed again...
