Always loved TCM2. Am I in the minority? It's the perfect mixture of nonsense comedy, Savini's over the top gore and Chop Tops catchy one-liners. A worthy sequel in my books.

I don't really consider it a sequel, more a stand-alone film made by someone who saw the trailer for the first film and thought it looked a little too serious!

I quite like TCM 2 for the first 40 mins whilst the action centres round the radio station. When they get back to the families underground lair it bores the hell out of me.

Being a massive fan of the original, I can always understand why there's so much division about the second film with Horror fans. I think it's always important to remember however, how much Tobe Hooper got royally screwed over by Canon and I reckon the sequel gets unfairly looked upon, mainly due to how monumental the original is. I think with part 2, if Hooper had been allowed to have his original screenplay, vision and edit untouched, then it might have been a very different kettle of chainsaws. Apart from the heavy censoring to Savini's FX (and I think what is left is outstanding, the Grandpa make up is excellent, perhaps just not as creepy as the first one), it's plainly obvious that the film was literally taken away from him and rewritten. Yeah, he didn't want to repeat himself and for a film that didn't need a sequel but got one, making part 2 the same as the original would have been senseless so you can't blame him for trying something different. The humour in part 2 that is so heavily frowned upon, is not a surprise to me, the original has a definite heavy streak of black humour throughout to begin with. I think what Hooper did was take that and run with it but Canon just didn't see his vision and we're left with a bit of a messy sequel. I think they screwed him over with 'Lifeforce' too. Hooper really hasn't had an easy ride in his Career in Retrospect. For all TCM 2's faults, it's undoubtedly hugely memorable and still has an important place in the horror timeline. I think the horror world would be a duller place had we been deprived of Dennis Hopper in a Chainsaw Duel. |

However the film the studio produced is the only version of TCM2 and unfortunately it is quite poor. Hooper's film Death Trap is also dreadfull and that's all his own work. |

Hehe, unfortunately, you'll find me defending Hoopers "DeathTrap" too, I actually am quite fond of his little nasty shocker. Granted, again, it's no TCM and it's not perfect but its also been very poorly treated on the home format over time. It wasn't until I got the nice DarkSky DVD release of this title (as Eaten Alive) that it started to truly look like the crazy little EC comic inspired indie that it is. Previous VHS releases make it look like someone left on a Red Darkroom bulb on for the entire duration. I like Robert Englund in this and Neville Brand's insane performance is very memorable indeed to this day. It has way more in common with the original TCM (and not just because Marilyn Burns shows up), the concept of a crazy owner with a dark secret isn't too far removed from TCM when you think about it. It's definitely got that same sadistic southern streak that makes his classic TCM so indelible. |

DEATH TRAP is a classic-so who's gonna do us a cover using the original Vipco precert artwork?
