DTS-HD does not always mean 5.1 or 7.1 audio. The French Blu has DTS-HD 2.0 tracks (Bluray.com's entry for the TENEBRE Blu). These are lossless, not uncompressed. The LPCM 1.0 tracks should be uncompressed. If a film is mono (and not remixed in stereo), then 2.0 is just dual-mono.

If a film was released to cinema's in mono then thats what the director and sound mixer did it for, not for some future where there will be multi channel. Watching it in mono or 2.0 is fine, its what it would have been at the cinema at the time, except with Blu ray probably with a better picture! 5.1 option is ok yes, if its done well, some are terrible, but saying your not going to buy it because its not 5.1 or 7.1 is stupid. Cutting off your nose to spite your face i think the saying goes. |

It looks definitive to me...and I'm biting!...I have a guid set up (HD tv PS3) though without a surround system (my neighbours would not be happy!)...all these various sound mixes mean squat to me...if it sounds guid...it sounds guid

You kinda hit the nail on the head there Mbarr ... I am sure it is fine for those who don't use home cinema systems. Great, I have no problems with that ... but many of us do mate.

I have a very good home cinema setup which includes a 7.1 surround sound system. I've listened to various soundtracks on various different films and have come to the conclusion that as long as it fits the film and presents the dialogue, soundtrack, sound effects and atmospherics well, it doesn't matter if it is 1.0 mono, 2.0 mono, 2.0 stereo or even 7.1 surround -- a good soundtrack is a good soundtrack. If you take the recent Psycho Blu-ray, I preferred the DTS-HD Master Audio Mono soundtrack to the 5.1 option in which the surrounds were dormant for 95% of the time and, when they were employed, they added nothing to the film.
