Tenebrae – The Film Debate

Is this, as many consider it to be one of Dario Argento's best films? Where does it rank in his oeuvre and what do you think about it?

Behind DEEP RED and about equal with SUSPIRIA.
Much better than CAT,FOUR FLIES and BIRD.

I really can't fault Tenebrae for much. It's one of those films you never tire of watching, and the score ranks as one of Argento's finest.

My favourite Argento; and my favourite giallo too.

Absolutely superb film, even if not to everyone's taste.

Superb indeed.
You've had that avatar a long time eh?

Such an iconic image, I knew the image before I even saw the film thanks to Chas Balun's deep red handbook.

I love so much about Tenebrae, the "This murder malarkey is pretty cool, no." score by Goblin, the "Calvin Klein" style flashback on the beach, the Doberman chase (Popular dogs in the 80's.) and of course the "Filthy Slimy Pervert!" line.

As you can probably guess from my choice of name, "Tenebrae" made quite an impression on me, basically changing my whole perspective on the genre when I watched it for the very first time in '91.
Best giallo, best Argento, one of my favourite genre movies of all time.

I love it! of course.
Well, I rank Argento's works like this:

1. Suspiria
2. Bird with the glass feathers
3. Tenebrae
4. Phenomena
5-8 Profondo Rosso/Inferno/Opera/Sleepless

Wow, that's pretty surprising to me. When I first saw Tenebre I liked it a lot, but after I saw Dario's animal trilogy my opinion for Tenebre went down a bit. I think it's mainly because of the colour sceme and the overly lit look they used for the film that bothers me. It's an interesting experiment but it always makes the film look slightly cheap to me.

How about the scene at the pool? Will it be 'daylight' without the blue filter like on the U.S. Anchor Bay DVD or will it have the blue 'nighttime' filter like on some other relaeses like the Dutch DVD?
I personally much prefer the scene without the filter. The shoes look such much more red in daylight
