Default The Bird with the Crystal Plumage – How You Discovered It

Have you seen Dario Argento's films in order or, like me, did you decide to check this one out after watching another of the Italian maestro's films and wanted to see more?

£2.50 on Vampix pre cert in a big pile of horror videos being sold off by a local video library. It was Beta, and the library were shifting Betas. This was around 1984.

I'd already seen Deep Red, Suspiria (at the cinema) and Tenebrae without realising they were all by the same director (very little information about those days), but was very unimpressed with Bird first time through.

It was only later when my tastes matured that I learned to accept it as a pivotal film in Argento's oeuvre, but still far from his best - although light years ahead of Cat o Nine Tails and the appalling Four Flies.

I first caught this on TV in the mid-80's (back when terrestrial TV used to show some good stuff). I watched it specifically because, at the time, it was an Argento I hadn't yet seen (our local video library never stocked this title). I'd already seen Suspiria and been impressed and wanted to check out Argento's first film.

This has nothing to do with censorship. I have (with the help of Stefan@Cult Labs) created this new section and opened threads to discuss aspects of the film. Once the Blu-ray is released, I will open the threads so people can discuss the technical aspects and reviews. At the moment, there is little point in discussing a Blu-ray that none of us have seen.

Unfortunately the compromised aspect ratio is about all there is to talk about with this release, sadly.

Really? Don't you have any interest in talking about the film itself, the artwork or how and where you first saw the film? There is much more to The Bird with the Crystal Plumage than the aspect ratio on one release, which is why there are different threads.

Closing the thread prematurely was not really necessary bud.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but I (and others) that that the discussion about the aspect ratio had run its course -- especially as the disc hasn't been released yet.

Can we leave this thread to the subject at hand, which is to discuss how you came across and discovered The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. If you would like to raise any more objections, please do so by sending me a PM.
