Let's look at it this way: we get a different version of that movie. Arrow will certainly have specific reasons for releasing this edition.

As far as I understand it (and please someone correct me/point me to the thread where I think I read this) but when Arrow acquire the rights to release a film they are unable to see what they've got to work with until the deal has gone through. Fairly certain Almar can clear this up if he sees this!

and as Argento isn't going to take legal measures concerning this release it shouldn't be that bad.
And again, correct me if I'm wrong but that would be out of Argento's hands surely?

I agree with people who say it's a shame for Arrow though as it's clearly dividing people and it's really out of Arrow's grasp to do much about it. While I rarely judge transfers/releases by screengrabs I do think the viewfinder screenshot is pretty damning and has a negative impact on the way the shot looks. I'll reserve full judgement until I see the film in full this way though (I probably will buy this in the end mainly for the extras, artwork, poster and booklet but since I already own the BU blu I'm in no hurry to get it)

You may be right, I read something similar in this forum not long ago. But I also look forward to Almar's clarification.

In the end, Argento's possibilities to prevent such a release would indeed be very small. However, I think he could succeed in forcing some kind of pre-opening title telling "This is Storaro's version of the movie. Dario Argento does not approve of it.". But I'm no expert. ;)

Greetings!

Yes - mad as it seems - you can get the rights to a film and then discover there aren't even materials - I can think of a number of titles in that basket with various labels. With Bird though the one and only master the licensor will authorise Arrow to use is this one so there we are folks.

Thanks for confirming that Almar. I can't imagine how much of a nightmare that makes the job of putting out films on bluray and dvd, it must be so frustrating! That said, I am glad we have this insight on the forum as it at least means we can understand the reasoning behind this specific release and it does help, for me anyway, to alleviate the disappointment (I know it sounds odd but I'm more inclined to get this now that I know what I know regardless of the technical specs. Plus the extras/booklets/artwork/etc still make it tempting!)

Well people can make a choice - it's transparent and that's a rarity in this industry. ;)

i don't say this jokingly; storaro must be mentally ill to think it ok to crop the film like that..i don't understand at all. isn't he a cinematographer? that black and white shot with only half the viewfinder is absolutely horrendous, anyone with eyes can see that. couldn't he at the very very VERY least have centered the shot so we had a bit of the viewfinder on each side?? very sad that this will be the first time i see the film, in this bizarre massacred version. :(
oh well, thankyou for trying arrow, you still get a sale out of me. hopefully someone will stop storaro before he kills again.

Oh dear, I thought the viewfinder in the second picture was only added to point out the new aspect ratio...
If that's what the final movie will look like, I can understand why some people might complain. However, I'll buy it because of the Arrow package and because of the fact that I do not have the movie in my collection yet.

Greetings!

Wow, that's just weird. There seems to be enough unused space on the left to crop a little bit in other screengrabs, but that is ridiculous. Why doesn't Arrow release a limited edition of all of their titles on BD without any manipulation? Or double-disc sets where we can choose between the original and the Arrow version.

Eh, well in the case of Bird, this is the way Storaro (and the licensors) want it, so it's impossible to release the original version now.
