Pieces – The Film Debate

If you've already seen Pieces, what do you think of the film? Also, when you receive the new Arrow Video DVD, let everyone know what you think.

keirarts 31st August 2011 03:04 PM

ok...

On a TECHNICAL level, pieces is poorly made garbage.

As A cult film fan I love the movie, WHY? because its fun.

The no1 rule of genre filmmmakeing should be, make your film fun, because no matter how inept the filmmaking, if its entertaining a lot can be forgiven.

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 31st August 2011 03:12 PM

I thought Pieces was competently made, with decent direction, cinematography, editing and scored music. Intentionally or otherwise, it is funny because of the dialogue and the more ludicrous situations outlined in the screenplay

To use one example: A man dressed in black from head to foot carries a chainsaw into a lift and the young woman inside doesn't think anything of it, despite knowing a couple of other students had been hacked into pieces with a chainsaw!

keirarts 1st September 2011 12:19 AM

yeah, Technically i didnt rate it, some poor continuity/acting/lighting/editing. But then I like films that are done a lot worse. (zombie creeping flesh/hell of the living dead as an example)

Honestly I dont think films need to be technical masterclasses to be good, I hate 90% of spielbergs movies and technically he's fantastic.

Arrived today :D

Despite not going to pick this up, I caved (it happens often). I look forward to seeing how it holds up to the US release. It's the extras I'm most interested in though. I'll be flipping that cover asap too :tongue1:

Have to say i love this film, partly because of it's absurdity and partly because it's just fun, illogical but fun. As already pointed out, the fact that someone can take a chainsaw into a small lift and the girl not notice/care, or the fact there's a waterbed room on campus right through to the Bruce Lee wanna be scene.

Although i have to look at what extra's this will have over the dvd copy i already have to see if its worth purchasing, shame there's no blu-ray release really. I do recommend this film to anyone who hasn't seen it however.

keirarts 6th September 2011 12:26 AM

I really dont think this film would benefit a great deal from blu-ray, its great on dvd in upscale.

mr 420 6th September 2011 11:12 AM

For me, Peices is one of the best 'switch your brain off and just enjoy the show' type of films EVER made. You couldn't make it up!

napalm-in-the-morning 6th September 2011 03:40 PM

Ordered today so looking forward to it. I looked to see if there was a blu ray option but thinking about it, what's the point? DVD with upscale is going to make this look as good good as is technically possible. I do think with a lot of older / low budget features blu ray is overkill.

Finally got around to this the other night. I thought Arrow did a superb job on this classic. Brought it to work today to play for the customers, gotta spread word about great films like this and ARROW VIDEO here in the states.
The wife dozed off for a minute during it but woke up to the crazy Kung Fu, needles to say she was confused as hell and thought I put on a different film. HaHa. Can't wait to check out the special features.

Colin654 7th September 2011 12:01 PM

Mine arrived on Monday but i have promised 2 friends that i won't watch it as it's showing at the All-Night Horror Madness 3 @ the Cameo Cinema in Edinburgh Oct 15th. Gonna be hard but will it be worth holding out to see it on the big screen first? :) C

napalm-in-the-morning 7th September 2011 12:13 PM

Big screen showing?! Wow! Nothing like that where I live! It's all multiplex cr#% here in Southend.

Vampix 7th September 2011 01:44 PM

There's some interesting stuff going on in London (not too far from Southend) for cult movie fans, napalm.

Scala Forever

There's an all-nighter going on this coming Saturday 10/9/11, featuring Re-Animator, Slugs, Basket Case, Phantasm and Humanoids from the Deep.

Colin654 7th September 2011 02:12 PM

Re-Animator is a joy on the BIG Screen! It was on at the last one. The line up was Society, Re-Animator, Flesh for Frankenstien, Opera and Braindead. Seeing Braindead on the big screen was a dream come true :D C:loco:

I think a special mention must go to whoever dubbed "Pieces" for American audiences, some of the changes they made to the original dialogue were inspired, in terms of upping the cheese factor even more.

"It's exactly what you think it is" - Indeed.

napalm-in-the-morning 8th September 2011 01:23 PM

Pieces just arrived. Set for a viewing tonight.. First impressions.. Glad the cover is reversible. Not liking the messy body parts artwork at all.

Slippery Jack 8th September 2011 03:32 PM

Definitely gonna purchase the Arrow after renting the older R2 release last night. I had a blast! Delivers both as a 'so-bad-it's-good' comedy, and as a surprisingly effective splatter fest - some really effective gore here. Plus a bunch of scenes that are going to go down as 'boozy movie night' classics: the tennis match, the kung-fu professor, and best of all...

"BASTARD!!!!....BASTARD!!!!....BASTARD!!!!!... ."
