You pretty much summed up my thoughts above, mate. ;)

A very dull and disappointing film, which is a shame as it had all the ingredients for a potentially trashy horror classic (Nazis, ghosts, and nudity :D).

I agree with you on most of your ratings, although I have a strange affinity for Aenigma, so would probably put that in the 'Not Bad' section.

I bet if he made it a few years before it would have been so much better. In those later films I get the impression Fulci wasn't really interested.

I've only seen AENIGMA once and that was about 5 years ago, so I really should give it another go. Same goes for BEATRICE CENCI.

Yeah, it seems to be a running theme with the Italian Masters, unfortunately. Their later work is often a struggle to sit through...

I liked Beatrice Cenci too. I'd like a decent DVD release of this one, though. I have the X-Rated Kult release and whilst it's fair, It'd be good to see a company like Shameless release a remastered version.

Oh, and it's good to see some love for Perversion Story, too. :thumb:

Demdike@Cult Labs 28th September 2011 05:54 PM

Seen Aenigma six or seven times, its pretty good.

I bought The Red Monks at the same time, tis a shame he didn't direct that one. I really enjoy it.

Going to take some sorting out is this Fulci list methinks.

It does. I do think the increasingly low budgets they were getting played a part, especially with Fulci.

The only director who could still made something decent would have been Mario Bava, as he seemed to be able to do anything no matter what the budget was.

PERVERSION STORY is quality though I was let down slighty by the end.

I had that hardbox and it was good but I agree a UK release would be welcome.

Err, its different.

You can watch it yourself if you put on a dvd of Conan, smear vaseline over your tv screen till you can't see whats going on, get the largest bottle of whisky around, and drink it very quickly - voila !- Your very own Conquest experience.

On a serious note though, i have seen it twice, it is so not like anything Fulci has put his name to before or since. One of those films you either love or hate, i think i love it.

Sounds er... interesting!

I don't own Conan either, so I can't even replicate the Conquest experience! ;)

I know you're not too keen on Westerns but I suggest you check out FOUR OF THE APOCALYPSE because it's not your typical oater - it's shot in a very cold, soft focus way and very downbeat. It's like Fulci thought 'You want cool gunslingers, sunny landscapes and fancy shootouts? Well **** you! I'm giving you cold, misreable landscapes, bizarre characters (one wanders around graveyards naked and talks to dead people), cannibalism, rape and some extreme violence'

Yeah I'm not big on Westerns, but this sounds like it could be just my sort of thing! :D
