At this rate you'll get it in your Crimbo pressies mate!

Sarah@Cult Labs 18th July 2012 08:21 AM

This just in from Arrow re: the delay to Who Dares Wins (and Wild Geese).

Quote:

WHO DARES WINS is delayed due to BBFC complications with THE COMMANDER – it will have to be cut due to the presence of cockfighting, the circumstances of the shooting of the film indicate that unlike other films where violence was incidental this appears staged. We, nor the producers cannot prove this is not the case and so must action some cuts to the film. Additional delays have been caused as we ensure we get the best masters available so we can present the longest versions available, cuts aside obviously, in widescreen. As soon as we can advise on a revised release date we will. We apologise for the continued delays to these releases but the Lewis Collins films have been quite problematic.

Hawkmonger 18th July 2012 08:39 AM

:headbang::headbang::headbang::headbang:
I swear to the good lord above! Well, not so bad really, I already have a pre-order in so my moeny's not going any where.

chainsawtothehead 18th July 2012 10:13 AM

That's usual practice with the BBFC: Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid and a Miami Vice (TV) episode were both cut for cockfighting scenes.

I pre-ordered this a while ago anyway! Well done Arrow

Haven't seen WDW for ages - and I actually remember the storming of the embassy being shown on the news!

Stephen@Cult Labs 18th July 2012 12:33 PM

I'm sick of this. Showing a cock fight is showing a cock fight. No matter if it was staged for the film. More BBFC bullshit.

Pete 18th July 2012 01:41 PM

Stupid BBFC! The uncut version has been on Movies For Men loads of times.

Personally I don't think it was staged by the filmmakers.

Hawkmonger 18th July 2012 02:37 PM

The BBFC can suck a drain pipe as far as i'm concerned. They didn't cut the cockfight from Love Goddess of the Cannibals did they?

Stephen@Cult Labs 18th July 2012 03:22 PM

Exactly. If it was staged by them and filmed, or they just filmed a cockfight that was happening anyway, both have been put on film for entertaintment and both can be considered cruelty (or not). This is the arguement I would use. I'd fight the decision. I know some people will say it's just a cockfight, but a cut is still a cut

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 18th July 2012 06:12 PM

I've plenty cock's fighting in pubs over the years and the only cuts were to faces!

****ing BBFC!

So what's the ETA now Sarah?

I've told the wife I want these films on my Crimbo list....;)

I think they should drop the bonus films from these releases and put them out separately. Make Pete happy with a cover for The Commander. :)

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 18th July 2012 06:41 PM

Yep.Good suggestion mate.

Pete 19th July 2012 03:25 PM

Wy don't Arrow contact Margheriti's son Edoardo? He's on Facebook. He worked on most of these films and could confirm if it was staged or not.

That's an excellent idea.

chainsawtothehead 21st July 2012 10:21 AM

Who Dares Wins out next January! :( (according to new amazon email)

The Commander I can live without - but when's the release of The Wild Geese now? I can't wait to see an anamorphic widescreen print of Codename!

They have got to be kidding! I think that might just be a placeholder date, until a new official date can be sorted. If it is true, I say to hell with The commander!

stanley kubrick 21st July 2012 12:03 PM

Well this is no surprise to me. I think it is about time the BBFC were decommissioned. The BBFC are a money making scheme, nothing more. I thought we lived in a democracy? Who says some middle class psychologist, who has no experience of life, can tell me what I can, and can't watch!

Do the BBFC think that people won't manage to find copy's of films that they deem unfit to watch? Film censorship is wrong, the cinema is art, and who are the they to remove images from an artist's vision. It's about time the BBFC got realistic!

Exactly. They're not even a government body, they're a private company, which is why local councils can easily overturn they're decisions with regard to screening an uncut version of a film the BBFC have cut (or even banned). They contradict themselves with there reasons for cutting one film and not another all the time. Sure, they should still be here to classify films, but to cut films, and tell me, as an adult, what I can and can't watch, while they (as our betters), can handle seeing all the stuff they cut, well, it's just not on. Oh wow, 2 cocks sqwaking and flapping their wings a bit! It's vile and needs to be cut. Get a grip BBFC!

stanley kubrick 21st July 2012 01:45 PM

Well we need some kind of unrated system in the UK. Lets be honest, the people who are going to purchase these sorts of films are all going to be in there 30's or older. The BBFC should realise this. Is some 18 year old really going to buy The Commander? No way, he is going to be buying some Hollywood Blockbuster like Fast and Furious 10, or whatever other garbage Hollywood are churning out these days. Lets hope Arrow fight this decision. The BBFC might as well cut the ending of Apocalypse Now, a real animal being slaughtered on screen for entertainment purposes, well what's the difference? I mean it was staged, I've seen Hearts of Darkness. Oh wait, they ate the animal afterwards, so that makes it O.K.

It could be a good thing these films are delayed, I'm sure it will only better the quality of the prints and extra features. I do hope Arrow decide to release Code Name: Wild Geese and The Commander on Blu Ray, rather than DVD. May be Arrow could get Lewis Collins to provide some commentary for all three of the films to be released, now that would be worth the wait.

How about more Antonio Margheriti added to the collection, The Last Hunter and Commando Leopard are crying out for a High Definition release. Well I can only hope.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 21st July 2012 06:31 PM

Well said Stanley-and welcome back from beyond the grave!;)

Hey, I'm 24 and I LOVE this stuff - I've been buying it since I was 15. Hell, I watched many of them before then :)

Thanks, well been busy working on the sequel to Full Metal Jacket, if I ever finish it!

Pete, sorry if I offended you. In my opinion, the majority of people who would buy these sorts of films; well I would say they grew up with them in the 80's, or grew up with their notoriety as 'video nasties'. Your average person hasn't even heard of The beyond, or The House by the Cemetery. Well that's my theory anyway.

I would like to make a really violent, vile piece of nothing, that says nothing, but causes a reaction, hopefully the wrong reaction, so the BBFC would freak. Anyone have any decent scripts hanging around?

Ha, no worries, I wasn't offended at all - just pointing out that there are some people under 30 who like these things. Though not enough sadly!

:)

So if The Commander was rated an 18, would it pass uncut? The BBFC say

''To obtain this category cuts of 1m 6s were required.''

No, Cockfighting is illegal, so it would have to be cut regardless.

Ahhhh, unless the filmmakers just happened to film a cockfight that was taking place, and didn't stage it themselves, in which case it isn't illegal (or cruel). Go figure!

Ah well, the pointless cutting of the Commander by my moral guardians has just forced me to buy a copy elsewhere. Not having them tell me what I can and can't see.

They say that but it didn't stop them cutting a cockfight from EMANUELLE IN BANGKOK, which was filmed in an cockfighting arena and was clearly going to happen anyway.

How stupid, obviously the scene was shot in a country were cock fighting isn't illegal. The use of drugs is illegal, so how come so many films feature drug use, and those scenes don't get cut? I hate the BBFC.

True. Inconsitant and two-faced. Just as they've always been.

THIS is my point exactly. There a useless, pointless, un-neccisary and painful sin that should be removed from there seat of power.

iluvdvds@Cult Labs 31st July 2012 09:38 AM

We've just recieved word from Arrow that The Commander is going ahead cut, as 'it seems the set up of the shots would not pass the BBFC, or it would be very difficult.'
