Jay Slater was the Silver Fox. That's a fact.

I've nothing personal against Jay at all, he's done nothing to me personally. However, I do find his critiques often far off the mark and his scribblings are more suited to the lad's mags he writes for than in a serious genre zine like Dark Side (or in Arrow booklets for that matter - where he thinks saying things likes 'tits' makes him look clever). And his tales of being at festivals really made me think he was trying a bit too hard to emulate the likes of Hunter S. Thompson et al with his adventures of drunken debauchery. I'd rather he talked about the films more than name-dropping and talking about what beverages he had consumed. It's easy to get wasted, it takes no effort at all, so none of that really impresses me, I'm afraid. Give any idiot a bottle of Jack Daniels and they'll get pissed, there's no real art to it. If his stories were actually funny that would be something, but they're not.

i have read many reviews by Slater and naturally there are some i actually agree with
but him saying something like 'watching VIDOCQ was like looking through candy wrappers'' or something
VIDOCQ is brilliant and one of my all time fave fims and not the above description
he has criticied other films/directors etc and most times i disagree with him

he is a film critic and they are just guides
a bit like all of us on this forum!
but Slater comes across as an arrogant sod

All true, but I must say I like Slater's 'Eaten Alive' any book that even mentions 'Porno Holocaust' with a straight face has to be worth a shot.

It's a great book, some good reviews in it, granted the good ones aren't written by Jay Slater

I burst out laughing as soon as is saw 'Porno Holocaust' which reminds me: my brother bought a CD last month and it had the funniest name for a track I have ever heard in my life! Brace yourselves people, because I'm about to tell you the name of that track:

'If Being a Cu*t was People, You'd be China' .

I hope you all enjoyed that

That's brilliant, I'm sure I'll use that saying plenty of times!

I think Eaten Alive is a pretty solid book but I could never understand what the hell Gestapo's Last Orgy was doing in there ?

Isn't that the one that has the nazis eating a jew fetus? If so, that's cannibalism...

Yeah, that's why. Always wondered why EMANUELLE'S REVENGE wasn't included as it contains a scene in which George Eastman hallucinates a big cannibalistic feast.
