Lisa And The Devil - Specs Thread

Lisa and the Devil (Arrow Video) Dual Format

EVERY CORNER OF THE SOUL IS LOST TO THE ICY CLUTCH OF THE SUPERNATURAL!

From the father of Italian Horror Mario Bava (Black Sunday, The Whip and the Body) comes a tale of nightmarish surrealism and supernatural suspense.

Lisa (Elke Sommer) - an American tourist travelling in Spain - loses her tour party and seeks refuge in the tumbledown mansion of a blind countess after being guided there by the distinctly satanic butler of the house, Leandro (Telly Savalas – Horror Express, Kojak). The Son of the Countess notices Lisa’s striking resemblance to his dead lover and pursues her as a night of murder, strange eroticism and dark hallucinations begins.

Re-cut in the US to cash in on the popularity of William Friedkin’s The Exorcist and released as The House of Exorcism (included in this special edition) the original Lisa & the Devil is Bava at his abstract and delirious best, delivering a 70s horror classic and a masterclass in cinema as feverish nightmare.

Special Features:

- High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentation of both versions of the film: ‘Lisa and the Devil’ and ‘The House of Exorcism’ producer’s cut

- Optional English and Italian audio on ‘Lisa and the Devil’

- English SDH subtitles on both features and a new English subtitle translation of the Italian Audio of ‘Lisa and the Devil’

- Audio Commentary on ‘Lisa and the Devil’ by Bava biographer and expert Tim Lucas

- Audio Commentary on ‘The House of Exorcism’ by producer Alfredo Leone and star Elke Sommer

- Introductions to both films by author and critic Alan Jones

- The Exorcism of Lisa – Assistant Director Lamberto Bava, screenwriter Roberto Natale, Roy Bava and Bava biographer Alberto Pezzotta discuss the making of both versions of the film

- Deleted Scene

Love this film, Telly Savalas is brilliant in it.

iluvdvds@Cult Labs 15th November 2012 11:16 AM

You may have seen this on Arrow's Facebook page, but they're looking for a high-res version of the below poster...

If anyone has a large high-res version of this or can find one, let us know! Arrow are giving away a Blu-ray of your choice to whomever can find one first.

Looks like Sawyer6 has found one if you check on Facebook

:woot: Cult Labbers to the rescue! Nice one Sawyer.

Bloody hell! Just google image search the title and a decent copy comes right up  I might do a bit of restoration and paint out those creases now . . .

I was thinking to do that but I think you're more experienced in that ;)

Rik 15th November 2012 11:34 AM

Here's another source for it too

Here's a copy I tidied up the creases on if anyone wants . . .

Slippery Jack 15th November 2012 11:41 AM

Hmmm did that shrink it a bit? Here's my full size one...

...sorry to keep posting, but I'm pedantic and bored at work. Here's one where I've sorted that dodgy kink at the bottom where the text was bowing a little, removed some of the pink colour fade on the left side, and painted out that black border which didn't seem to be part of the design. Like I say I'm bored at work

I'm guessing they are looking for a file big enough to use for print. I got a 300 dpi file. Don't know if it's good enough but drop me a line.

Do you have a version of this that's even higher res, SJ? It's still too low for printing apparently.

swarez 15th November 2012 12:17 PM

I got a high res file.

Well I can save that at a higher res, not sure if that will make any difference with image quality, but can give it a try . . . ?

That's exactly what I did for the ZFE one. Searchit up, go to the resolution settings. Pick the biggest

Daemonia 22nd November 2012 11:40 AM

Interesting fact: when Savalas was making this film he was trying to quit smoking and having trouble with it and Bava suggested he suck a lollipop. So, really, Bava was responsible for Kojak!

doolahrock 7th January 2013 12:53 PM

Does anyone know where the transfers for the two Bava films were sourced from? Keen to pick these up but I think I'll wait to see what the PQ verdict is.

The 4th Fella 8th January 2013 08:18 PM

My favourite Elke Sommer film, though I have the IE release, i'm double dipping. I have not seen House Of Exorcism, so that'll be a nice extra, as will the Sommer commentary, i'm sure. :)

I'd rather hear it from Arrow. You'd think they would've mentioned it when they annouced the dual format editions.

Yeah I believe that too

Encouraging -

The release is definitely worth owning. The transfers for the two films are struck from older masters, most likely masters that were prepared some time ago for the DVD releases. There are some light scratches, small specks, etc.

But they are raw. None of this problematic machine noise that we have been seeing on "newer" transfers is here. There are no sharpening/degraining corrections to make the films look "new". In other words, while the age of the masters (and obviously the transfers) shows, these films have organic looks.

BAKA 30th January 2013 03:57 PM

Yeah, I saw that too. Their review is supposed to go up sometime today, and I keep checking, but no such luck yet.

Refresh like mad!
Payday tomorrow, guess it might finally be time to pull the trigger on the two Bava's.

Still no sign of The House of Exorcism being re-submitted. Complications?

JAMIOUSE 31st January 2013 06:48 PM

Interesting review, we can summise that Arrow haven't used the same HD master as Kino did for their Blu disc. Hmm, is that good or bad?

I haven't seen much comment about LATD but I know some people were unhappy with the Kino Black Sunday.

JAMIOUSE 31st January 2013 08:19 PM

Theres no reviews yet for Black Sunday, fingers crossed.

The guy who reviewed it on blu-ray.com was the reviewer which spotted the missing footage on ZFE, and was told by Arrow it was just on the check discs - I respect the guys opinion!
He did mention on the forums that there isn't much between Arrow and Kino's version, but Kino's has better compression.
