Silver Screen Scream Queens!

Trying saying that drunk...

I've been getting back into Blue Oyster Cult recently and am HOOKED on this awesome track dedicated to the one and only psycho femme-fatale, JOAN CRAWFORD;

So, here's a thread to discuss the very best 'Scream Queens' from the silver age of cinema - back before the 70s and 80s took horror to a new place.

Horror fans in general seem to praise the likes of Jamie Lee Curtis and Heather Langenkamp, but it's time to show the golden...uh silver... oldies some loving!

What are the greatest female horror stars from before the 1970s? Who are your faves and which films would you recommend?

From silver screen screamers to psychos...

Simone Simon.

Simone Simon was a French born actress who moved to Hollywood in the 30's. She achieved fame in Val Lewton's classic 1942 horror Cat People. Hauntingly beautiful and just as deadly, her cat like mannerisms threatened to make her a major star as she returned to headline The Curse of the Cat People (1944). However her film career stalled and by 1950 she had returned to France thanks in turn to the FBI who were investigating her for having an affair with a double agent during World War II.

Great post, Dem!

I still have yet to see those Cat People films myself. Hopefully this thread will introduce us all to loads of great horrors :nod:

>>Oh, and for anyone who hasn't already, do check out Dem's awesome thread dedicated to Silver Screen Sirens in general too. Loads of great pics!<<

Another one would be Bette Davis, who starred in one of the very best Hammer horrors (imo!), The Nanny

Hazel Court

Birmingham born Hazel Court was the archetypal English rose who lit up everything i've seen her in with her effervescent persona.

In a career beginning in 1944 she starred in many horror / fantasy films most notably Hammer's The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) and Roger Corman's The Masque of the Red Death (1964).

Her book Hazel Court Horror Queen - An Autobiography is a delightful read.

Publicity still from The Raven (1963)
