Jodelle Ferland. Don't know the name? You will by the end of this screed I hope. It started innocently enough when a mate purchased the Terry Gilliam film Tideland (2005). If you haven't seen it, Jeff Bridges plays an unorthodox parent who passes, leaving his daughter to wander off into a world of her own making. At the time we were all impressed by the performance of said actor....which seemed to belie her years etc.

Time passes, and I'm sitting in my mates watching the awful Case 39 (2009) and michty, there's that quine again. Not that the part is anything to wrtite home about, but there was an unsettling blankness to her performance that rose out of the muck of said production. Next up came her turn in Silent Hill (2006), (look I know the chronology of this is aw tae f*ck, but I did avoid SH for years ahem!) which I'm sure most of you have seen. now at this point I was making comments about typecasting and her being the US Nicoletta Elmi etc etc.

So what you may ask? Children have appeared in horror films for decades, Patty McCormick, Giovanni Frezza et bleeding cetera. It's just that she started turning up in practically everything I watched over a period....Seed, Cabin In The Woods, Paranorman, there she was. Now I was talking about her being the "anti Dakota Fanning". Boy, do I love to pontificate..... And yes, I know she has appeared in non genre stuff, but I was content with seeing her appear as the child in most of these ( see typecasting, lazy producers etc etc). Twas whilst sitting yet again in my mates, and he puts on the awful Icequake (2010) and lawdy, it's her playing the sensible sibling! I really don't know where this has all come from, but felt that watching a film with her AND Dakota Fanning would "exorcise" this situation somewhat. Hence watching the excreta that was Eclipse. A mistake I will not make again. What awful shit it was. Beyond parody, it may yet rival Pearl Harbour for worst film ever imho.

It continues...spotted her in an episode of Special Unit 2 on THC, earliest performance yet, but carried her line off with aplomb imo!
