Gate trilogy, Lucio Fulci

Posted 20th February 2010 at 10:16 AM by kevarno1982

With Arrow realsing ''City of the Living Dead'' on Blue-ray in the not to distant future, will they be releasing, ''The Beyond'' (Lucio Fulci best work in my opinion with Zombie Flesheaters) and the third in the trilogy, ''House by the Cemetary''
Does anyone know if arrow will be releasing the full trilogy?

Screenplay TAKE 2!

Posted 19th January 2010 at 12:46 PM by iluvdvds@Cult Labs

Hi there! So, I've gone and done another version of the screenplay - see the other blog for more info.

I tried to make it less weird but well, it only got weirder as it went along!

Let me know what you make of it guys

Ext. Whitechapel. Night - 1888.

Dense fog covers the full moon as 1 walks along the deserted cobbled path. He wears a black top hat and a black cloak concealing his suit. In his gloved hand is a long metal silver cane which...

Posted 19th January 2010 at 10:09 AM by iluvdvds@Cult Labs

Hey there! I haven't done one of these in aggges - but, having spoken to Sam, thought this would be a nice blog.

1. Oh.
2. Yes.
1. Why are you doing this?
2. It's for the best.

This year we've had awesome Sci-fi with the likes of District 9, Moon and Terminator Salvation, Some Descent horror remakes like My bloody Valentine to original horror movies like Trick'r'Treat and the Hills run Red. Thirst (Bakjwi - 2009)

Posted 14th November 2009 at 03:20 PM by Philleh

Thirst (Bakjwi - 2009)
Focus Features

The vampire genre, as we all know, has arisen from its coffin once again – thanks, some may say, to a Mormon. Though I don’t see Twilight as the saviour of the genre, I like to think Alan Ball and his excellent adaptation of Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire series, True Blood, is the saving grace behind the re-birth. It’s the anti-Twilight in everyway, and everything vampirism should be; dark, brooding, dangerous and sexual –...

Terror Express (La Regazza del Vagone Letto - 1979)

Posted 12th November 2009 at 02:20 PM by Philleh

Terror Express (La Regazza del Vagone Letto - 1979)
Camera Obscura

Terror Express is a late-comer to the rape/revenge genre that was launched by Wes Craven’s sadistic Last House on the Left, but it’s also one of the sleaziest, scrap that, possibly the sleaziest; though that really isn’t that shocking when you realise it’s from the same mind that conjured up such classy titles as Porno Holocaust and Erotic Nights of the Living Dead - Luigi Montefiori (A.K.A George Eastman)....

Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)

Posted 6th November 2009 at 02:58 PM by Philleh

Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)
Arrow Video

The Slasher genre is no stranger to controversy, but there was one film that went a little too far with its seasonal slaughter – 1984s Silent Night, Deadly Night. Halloween had been done, Valentine’s Day had been done, Birthdays had been done, hell Christmas had already been done, repeatedly, but people didn’t seem to pay much mind to Black Christmas or Christmas Evil. Silent Night, Deadly Night however, struck a chord with...

Halloween

Posted 3rd November 2009 at 08:37 PM by Sarah@Cult Labs

I know Halloween's well gone but I've only just recovered from my hangover so I'm blogging this now. How did I celebrate Halloween, I hear you cry?

Well, one of Liverpool's premier CAMRA pubs was hosting a German beer festival so I went to that and generally filled up on German beer plus one Halloween-themed ale entitled Headless Horseman. All in all it was pretty awesome. This was then topped by staggering home, ordering pizza, drinking Fosters and watching Halloween and Halloween...

Anyway...... I did a mix which went out on my mates radio show on Hallowe'en. Hopefully it instills within you the same sense of dread that it instilled within everyone else that heard it. I know you are all a hard bunch...

A halloween vhs massacre

Posted 1st November 2009 at 06:27 PM by Sam@Cult Labs

A HALLOWEEN VHS MASSACRE

Last night I screened the Argento cut of Dawn of the Dead to a rapturous and occasionally confused audience of Halloween freaks in the achingly hip Buffalo Bar, Cardiff.

Rapturous because it's Dawn of the Dead, it's Halloween and nothing gets a crowd in the mood for all night dancing like gut munching Zombies in an abandoned shopping centre.

Confusion because most of the people were familiar with the film and the alternate...

Following your dreams

Hi all,

I’m not writing this blog because these are my current thoughts. I learnt these lessons over a decade ago, but wrote this so it is on my website, in case it helps someone else.

I work on Laugh or Cry TV and other projects for fun. It has come to my attention that lots of people do not understand it if you say to them that you want to follow your dreams. They simply do not comprehend that you only have one life and it is for living. To them, the chances of...

What has HD done for us?

Posted 9th October 2009 at 08:10 AM by BioZombie
Updated 9th October 2009 at 08:33 AM by BioZombie

Hello again, well the second installment of my blog has taken rather longer in coming than I had first hoped, and its on a totally different subject than I’d intended. I’ve decided to write down my thoughts (as a humble user) about high definition, specifically blu-ray, and list what I have found to be the pros and cons of the format. With the Arrow release of Dawn of the Dead on blu-ray looming hopefully this may help people to decide if the switch to HD is really worth it.

Jennifer’s Body (2009)

Megan Fox, or to be more specific Megan Fox’s derrière, is the only logical reason I can find to explain the success of Michael Bay’s Transformer franchise, it sure as shit wasn’t the clever plotting, witty dialogue and mesmerising performances that launched those movies to box-office glory; surely? Then we have Juno, a small Indie movie that contains witty dialogue and mesmerising performances, it lacked Megan Fox’s derrière but...

Don't fear the cliches!

Posted 5th August 2009 at 12:35 PM by Peter Neal

"Originality is very overrated". Is that thought utter blasphemy for a writer...? I don't think so, depending of course on what your goal in writing really is.
Cliches...horror fans throughout the www know them by heart and love to complain about them in various reviews and debates- yet they seem to be magically attracted to any new slasher-, backwoods-, torture porn flick coming along, though years of watching movies should have told them by now that they'll be once again in...

"Target groups": Blessing or curse for the writer and audience?

Updated 4th August 2009 at 10:23 AM by Peter Neal

Watching and reviewing 1982's "Poltergeist" some months ago got me really thinking again about how much the present fixation on "target groups" has drastically changed the kind of (movie) entertainment we're served in the present day.
Whereas the 70's/80's blockbusters (particularly the Spielberg- and Lucas supervised and influenced ones) went to high lengths to furnish stories, which would appeal to and satisfy the entertainment needs of a whole "average family",...

I thought it might be fun with my first blog to write a bit about some of the films that first got me to love the horror genre. These are films that I saw when I was about 15 and spent most of my weekends renting horror films with friends. We saw a lot of rubbish,...

To Be Twenty (Avere Vent’anni - 1978)

Posted 10th July 2009 at 02:08 PM by Philleh

To Be Twenty is a cautionary tale of two young, liberated, free-spirited women who spend their days looking for somewhere to crash, someone to **** and to generally act like spoilt little brats, until a run-in with a group of thugs turns this apparent light hearted tale into a nasty slice of Euro-slime – if you watch the Italian cut of the movie, that is. If you watch the American cut it’s a fun, care-free sex comedy! How can one film vary so dramatically?

The Italian cut is...

Breaking News

Posted 8th July 2009 at 03:03 PM by Philleh

Why do the media (and the public) love tragedy? Nothing gets the papers selling, or the viewing figures soaring, like a good ol’ siege! How about a healthy dose of genocide? Or maybe a mother who decided to murder her own children? Or the disgruntled employee who decided that enough was enough and takes his friend, AK-47, to the office one day? Each story is guaranteed to sell, sell, sell. Whatever happened to the good old days of covering cat shows and water skiing squirrels?

Deadgirl

Posted 8th July 2009 at 08:54 AM by Philleh

American Indie cinema has enjoyed something of a resurgence recently. Films like The Hamiltons, Girl Next Door and, more recently, Grace have proven that there is no shortage of talent in the states. Daring filmmakers, who are willing to lead their audience down unexpected and often perverse paths; willing to push the envelope of decency, in the name of originality. Be it stillborn zombie babies or pre-pubescent rapists, there’s no denying that this new breed of horror creators are willing to...

Happy End

Posted 7th July 2009 at 10:23 AM by Philleh

Korean cinema has a plethora of unsung masterpieces that deserve a wider release. Films like Friend (Chingu), Oasis and Peppermint Candy seemed to have lingered in distribution purgatory until recently, with few films like Memories of Murder and Save the Green Planet being able to find the audience they rightly deserve. One movie that more than deserves its title as one of Korean new-waves greatest achievements is Happy End.

It’s the rarest of art-house feats, a film that doesn’t...

80’s Hong Kong cinema holds a very special place in my heart. If it weren’t for this little Island my love for Asian cinema would likely be non-existent today. How to start Scriptwriting Part 5: Writing the Script

Posted 23rd June 2009 at 10:23 AM by Peter Neal

You're prepared, you know where you want your story and characters to go: Time to write!
But before you start writing you should remember that there'll ALWAYS be a 2nd draft, a 3rd, probably many, many more.
Which means- to me at least- that the first draft is still very much a testing ground.
Thanks to the treatment, you don't have to think about the whole of your script for each and every line, you can concentrate on your script scene by scene, as the path you've intended...

I recently recorded a radio show for my friend's 'net station. It's about the giallo movie and it contains some truly amazing music, as you would imagine. It's not a particularly informative piece, but it does take on a life of it's own about 25 - 30 minutes in. The show itself is an hour and forty minutes long, but unfortunately the pay-off is specific to my friends website so will be lost on any of you who download it, unless you're a regular reader of CookdandBombd, my mates incredibly popular...

Posted 14th June 2009 at 09:50 AM by Sam@Cult Labs

All Time Top 100

Cardiff has an exciting night where local people involved in "the creative arts", get to play their top 100 records to a room full of hipsters.

I'm playing in July, so the groovers of Cardiff can expect 60s Psych, 70s funk, New York Disco, Punk rock and Don't Stop Believin' by Journey.

As usual, I can't leave well alone and I've made a mix cd. My and my partner will make 50 hand...

The U.S government is keen to put a stop to his antics but are fearful that a extradition to the U.S will have deadly consequenses. How to start Scriptwriting Part 4: The Treatment

Posted 8th June 2009 at 06:31 AM by Peter Neal
Updated 8th June 2009 at 07:54 AM by Peter Neal

A treatment in the "professional" sense- the kind you send on its journey to production companies and cultural/media funds- is telling your movie's story from start to finish, scene by scene, on 10+ pages (depending on the length you're aiming at).
You should avoid reflecting too much about what's happening INSIDE your characters, most important is what's actually supposed to happen on screen.
If you have a clever "surprise ending/revelation", do yourself a favour...

Lucio Fulci's House by the Cemetary:

Home is where the entrails are! Lucio Fulci’s intestine splattered homage to the works of H. P. Lovecraft is as intriguing, and as shocking, now as it was nearly 30 years ago. How to start Scriptwriting Part 3: The Locations

Posted 31st May 2009 at 10:41 AM by Peter Neal

Okay, some might consider my following notion as "limiting" to their creativity, but in fact it usually gets my inner "writing machine" really going, as it fills me with a feeling of: "Yeah, this really could be pulled off!"

So, you want to write a script for a short movie or a full feature, but you're not exactly blessed with a bank account bursting with cash, then you have to take the following advice by heart before you're even writing your script...

Updated 23rd May 2009 at 05:28 PM by Peter Neal

The following notions do probably not apply to your script in case you're doing some "auteur"-style project, as the "auteur" is first and foremost only interested in realising "his vision" for himself and those in the audience who "get it".
The "auteur" can have his characters doing the most irrational things without any apparent reason, yet he SHOULD have a reason or "motivation"- even though it's only working for himself and...

Possession

Another film caught up in the UK's draconian Video Nasty clampdown of the early ‘80s, Possession is in fact more of an extreme art house movie than the exploitative hard gore horror films it was lumped in with on the Department of Public Prosecutions banned list.

First of all, a word of caution - viewers expecting bloody thrills...

Men Behind The Sun

The ultimate geek show movie or a harsh indictment of Japan's war crimes during the second world war? Maybe it's both but be assured, Men Behind The Sun is one of the harshest, most uncompromising films ever committed to celluloid and then inflicted on an audience.

The film open with some young male adolescents who...

Well, I'm not exactely "successful"- neither could I make a living of my writing....so far.

I was asked how far I would like to take wrestling, if I would be happy in a small promotion. I would be happy in terms of the actual job, but it wouldn't make any business sense. You can't make a living anywhere other than WWE or TNA, and TNA's longevity remains to be seen. That means the goal is WWE, which would also be good creatively because there would be the benefit of a weekly audience which most...

Murder Rock

You've got to hand it to those crazy Italian exploitation directors, they knew how to churn out a watchable rip off of mainstream cinema's hit movies in double quick time. La Cabina

This amazing short film was directed by Antonio Mercero for Spanish television in 1972. It's a wonderful example of efficient, lean horror story telling which squeezes in plenty of thrills and shocks in its 40 minute running time.

First of all a quick warning. I am about to give a semi-decent review of a really bad film. Fulci's Conquest doesn't even register on the quality film radar in comparison to his masterworks like The Beyond or Don't Torture A Duckling. Takashi Miike is capable of producing some extremely flawed cinema alongside his works of cultish genius like Audition or Full Metal Yakuza. But, even though Silver is among his least effective movies, in Miike world even the lesser work is still mildly entertaining. Drenched in bloodshed and perversity, Miike Amoral visions may have got a little fuzzy with Silver but as a comic book orgy of smutty sexual weirdness and sickening violence it's...

As a serial blogger I have a Youtube channel or two and they receive pretty modest traffic however two videos have proven to be more successful than most videos on Gordon Brown's tepid 10 Downing Street channel.

The reason for their success is not down to me but purely on account of the aesthetically pleasing sight of Anna Ammirati's arse hovering above a bicycle seat.

Unfortunately for Gordon people are not interested in what he has to say. However Annna's sublime...

The Sinful Dwarf

The Sinful Dwarf. Quiet the title isn’t it? The Sinful Dwarf. It’s a title you can repeat over an over again, your brain bombarding you with images of what you could possibly bare witness to during the movie. With each mention of the title, the more graphic and perverse the image. With such self-hype, can the finished product ever compete with your perverted little minds? Highly doubtful, but to the creators credit, they certainly went all out in trying!

The most common term used by fans to describe their feelings towards the majority of independent horror is “IT HAD POTENTIAL”. That’s not exactly a statement that makes you want to run out and rent/buy the product is it? Adam Mason is a man who knows a lot about ‘potential’. After making two shockingly substandard horror movies, The 13th Sign and Dust respectively, he was stuck in music video purgatory for his assault on horror fans senses. Black Xmas (Glen Morgan, 2006)

The 1974 Black Christmas was a hugely important film for horror cinema, with its bleak forboding atmosphere, unseen assassin, grisly kills and knockout of an ending it set a high standard for other slasher films to follow. Luckily he left us with some fantastic films including a great late Boris Karloff vehicle, the Sorcerers, but of the three, Witchfinder General is his masterpiece, a slice of harrowing 17th horror that's a million miles away from the campy fun of it's Hammer contemporaries.

Queen of 70s black cinema, Pam Grier (Cleopatra Jones, Coffy, Jackie Brown) stars in this "Chicks-in-chains" rehash of the Classic Tony Curtis/Sidney Poitier prison escape film, "The Defiant Ones".

Two women prisoners, one black, one white, exist in a hellish prison where bullish lesbian guards hound them. During transportation an uprising from their fellow inmates allows our pair to escape into the jungle, joined...

House of Fear

In Drearcliff Manor a society of aging men live in a weird commune called The Good Companions, where each is heavily insured and the other members are the beneficiaries. The foreboding housekeeper hands each an envelope containing an ever-shrinking amount of orange pips before they are murdered in grisly fashion. The corpses are found mutilated, living up to a look legend that no one leaves Drearcliff in one piece...

Meeting Dario...

Posted 2nd May 2009 at 10:59 AM by Neon Killer

OK so I'm an aspiring Horror Director; have been making Short Films since I was 10. To cut a long story short, a few years ago I decided to attempt a homage to my beloved Giallo genre. That was SLASH HIVE (aka SIX DEATHS IN A WASP'S EYE);

which you can see here:

...We screened it around the place, various festivals, even got a plug on XFM by Alex Zane, who really liked it.

SLASH HIVE was shot in one day on bugger all money, so the...

Beefed Up Scary Audio For the "Video Nasties" in 70's/80's Germany

Posted 2nd May 2009 at 10:16 AM by Peter Neal
Updated 2nd May 2009 at 10:28 AM by Peter Neal

Okay, I have no clue whether this newest entry to my blog will be of any interest to UK genre fans, but as a long term German collector of horror titles from the 70's and 80's I felt an urge to add a bit of info on what makes some of the German language versions of our beloved "Video Nasties" so unique compared to any other editions around the globe.

Very much unlike today (apart from cuts to escape the wrath of the German censors), distributors toyed a lot around with...

Dementia (Daughter of Horror)

Posted 2nd May 2009 at 10:07 AM by Sam@Cult Labs

Dementia (Daughter of Horror)

A real oddity, Dementia (also known by it's alternate title, Daughter Of Horror), started life as a 10 minute short before Director John Parker expanded this essentially silent movie into a 60-minute feature.

The movies only real dialogue comes from a narrator, a trick used in a lot of sleazy sex pictures in the 60s such as the Olga series of S&M movies. He welcomes us in the horrific depths of a fractured...

If

If

Malcolm McDowell (Clockwork Orange) takes on the establishment in this allegorical tale about the horror's of the British Public school system. Made in 1968, when popular culture seemed to be questioning everything, If... mirrored the global explosion of youth rebellion and it presents an educational system for the sons of the well off that seems designed to brutalize and beat the will out of young boys.

Directed by Lindsay Anderson...

Ruth Gordon Movies

Rosemary's Baby

"This isn't a dream... This is really happening!"

Mia Farrow stars with John Cassavetes in Roman Polanski's timeless chiller about Guy, a jobbing actor, and his elfin wife, moving into an old fashioned apartment building in New York City*. The filmmakers used the Dakota Building, which became infamous later on as the place outside which John Lennon was shot. The loving couple soon become friendly with the apparently...

Terror

Terror

A very young Jack Nicholson stars in this Roger Corman cheapy in which a young soldier in the Napoleonic wars chases a mystery women into an old, and of course creepy, castle occupied by a frail Baron, played by Boris Karloff.

The Baron is a deeply troubled man as a twisted old witch is trying to drive him to suicide and the strange girl that Nicholson followed is in on the plot...With Nicholson trapped in the eerie castle, all...

Something Weird...

Posted 2nd May 2009 at 08:20 AM by Sam@Cult Labs

Odean issued some the Something Weird DVD a while back and, although the discs weren't as special as the extra packed R1 editions, it was still great to see these bottom shelf oddities in UK stores. Republishing this review gives me an excuse to post up some really odd trailers...

Unlikely Horror Gem #1: Nature Morte

Posted 1st May 2009 at 05:29 PM by bizarre_eye@Cult Labs

I thought that I would start my blog with a topic that is very close to my heart: Obscure, but excellent (in my eyes anyway) pieces of horror film-making available on DVD, that may have escaped the radar of even the most keen eyed movie hound.

The DVD market is saturated with obscure horror DVD’s nowadays thanks to the disappearance of the BBFC’s iron fist on censorship, growing demand from a wider fan base, and great DVD labels who are prepared to invest in movies, and who believe...

Cat in the Brain

Posted 30th April 2009 at 11:59 PM by Philleh

My review of Lucio Fulci's gore-opus is up over at Wildside.

Veteran filmmaker, Lucio Fulci, is haunted by the crimes he’s committed – on celluloid! Visions of graphic murder are consuming him and driving him to the brink of insanity; murders that he shot for his movies and for his audience. When reports of a real-life serial killer hit the news, Fulci seeks the help of psychiatrist, Egon Schwarz, but the professor has other designs for poor old Lucio… Deadly designs, in which...

My review of Shameless Screen Entertainment's latest DVD is up at Wildside.

The owner of the limo is Baba Yaga (Carroll Barker), an older woman who is instantly smitten by the young Valentina. Memories of Murder

Posted 30th April 2009 at 09:07 PM by Philleh

Memories of Murder: Death of a Nation’s Innocence.

Bong Joon-ho’s 2003 masterpiece, Memories of Murder (Salinui Chueok) may not be held in such high regard with international audiences as, say, Park Chan-wook’s teeth-pulling, hammer-time classic Old Boy; which was released the same year and would go on to earn many, many awards on the international festival-circuit but in its homeland, it was Memories of Murder that was the smash-hit; drawing wayward of five-million admissions...
