Because of the working conditions in their warehouses, I'm using Amazon less and less, recently buying books (used and new) from eBay and new from Hive, who deliver to your local independent bookshop or your home, with (I think) a percentage of your order helping to support the actual shop as well.

Due to mainly buying obscure books on esoteric subjects, I buy direct from the publisher most of the time if I can. Generally, I buy fiction for my Kindle.

I'm very lucky to have an amazing second hand bookshop in town. But The Book People online sometimes have amazing sets of books cheap, then abebooks, world of books, I think they're mainly second hand.

Or as an ex-librarian I will also say support your local library!

I enjoyed that. Merrily Watkins is a good character. When i read it i was sure it was by a woman author under a pseudonym, but apparently not.

This!

I rarely buy books any more (except film related/specialist books) mainly as I don't have the space so most of my reading comes courtesy of libraries or second hand via markets, charity shops or second hand shops.

Locally its WHSmith or charity shops. There's a Waterstones in Abergavenny about 10 miles away but i loath paying their overblown prices. We do have a library, my sister-in-law is a librarian there, but i like owning books.

For new books, you could try The Book Depository - pretty sure they offer free shipping.
For 2nd hand genre books, Cold Tonnage Books in the UK is brilliant. I've bought a lot of books from CT, over the past 20 years.

I used to use them all the time, but thought they had been bought by Amazon several years ago.
