What Books Have You Bought Recently?
Finally!! I've never read the comic strip before but I'm a long time fan of the movies, and Barry Humphries in general. Looking forward to reading this one. Last edited by MuckyFunster; 1st October 2016 at 01:07 PM. |

Picked this up in HMV this afternoon. Despite the school reading book cover its actually a rather decent collection of Washington Irvings work. |

I seen this is HMV the other day there. A great big behemoth of a book! I'm sure I read Sleepy Hollow at school and is quite a short story...? Have they just named that on the cover as it's the most well known? I don't really know much of Washington Irving. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Is Sleepy Hollow his only supernatural tale or is the book full of them? I have a £20 Waterstones card still so it might be something to spend it on. |

I'm not sure but i think supernatural/weird fiction only made up a small portion of his work. I really don't know that much about him but for £9.99 i thought it worth a punt.

Have you not looked at the contents or read the sleeve notes yet?

Yes. Neither really give much away. The sleeve notes focus on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow which only actually takes up 25 pages out of 862. The table of contents obviously gives the names of the various tales included and while a few appear to allude to the supernatural or extraordinary, i have no real way of knowing until i read further. There is an introduction that suggests many of the stories are sketches and observations on life in general. But that supernatural horror is a theme to which Irving would return throughout his career. He is likened a few times to James Fenimore Cooper and Nathaniel Hawthorne.
