Fave opening lines of books

So what are your favourite opening lines to any books (fiction or non-fiction doesn't matter).

One of my faves is from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas:

"We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold."

"It was a queer, sultry summer, the summer they electrocuted the Rosenbergs, and I didn't know what I was doing in New York."

Sylvia Plath: The Bell Jar (1963)

My local The Works shop has both Trainspotting books on sale cheap at the minute, I had a quick look at them the other day and realised I'd struggle to read them because of the Scottish prose
Tolkien is easier to understand

"Later, as he sat on the balcony eating the dog, Dr Robert Laing reflected on the unusual events that had taken place within this huge apartment building during the past 3 months"
