Reading The City And The Stars by Arthur C Clarke.

In the future, Man has retreated to a gleaming eternal city, as a space war has put them off their travel plans. A young man discovers a terrible secret (and love) whilst seeking the truth behind this "utopia". Written in 1956, this has been reworked several times (Logans Run, The Island etc), but is none the worse for it. i can sort of guess the ending, but will reserve judgement until then.......

I finished reading Slaughterhouse Five this morning and then read 1408 from Stephen King Goes to the Movies. I'll probably read Cities of the Plain by Cormac McCarthy next, because I read The Crossing last week and want to finish 'The Border Trilogy'.

The late, great Mr. Herbert, as we've all said before, will be remembered for generations for his wonderful literature. "The Dark", along with all of "The Rats" books, "The Fog" and "Moon", etc.,were some of the best books of any genre I have ever read, and that's not just hyperbole! He exploded into my awareness in about 1975 when "The Fog" was advertised on the sides of every bus in South Yorkshire and I, as a teenager into everything dark and scary, just had to buy it. I had never read anything like it before! It was almost like a premonition of the turbulent "Punk" age of the late '70s!

I must get my reading mojo back and read 'em all again.

Finally finished....

All 40 Discworld novels.

It's been emotional.

A mixed bag perhaps, not so keen on the Tiffany aching books.

Still weird to start a series that's sword and sorcery and ends up victoriana steam punk.

Quintessentially British through and through and uniquely funny.

Only problem is what to read now!

I've been on a mission for the last years to try and read everything considered a true "classic" (i'll probably be on this mission my whole life) in the western world. Currently reading Treasure Island. I haven't read as much as I wanted to this year. But it's good for my wallet that i've stopped buying so many books, I've spent a lot more money on books than I have on movies.

Life would've been easier without so much different stuff to spend money on.

Now that is a philosophy I can gel with, well that or the other permutation "Life would be so much easier with a shed full of cash to spend on what I like"!

Sometimes I think that James Herbert's books got a teensy bit "wetter" as they got more sophisticated. His earlier stuff had so much "oomph!"
