I too recommend Arkham Asylum. As a none devoted graphic novel reader can i also recommend Child of Dreams and Year One.

I also really like the Birds of Prey series. I kinda think if i'm going to read a comic it may as well have large breasted girls wearing slinky outfits in it. In that respect the Michael Turner Fathom books were also well worth a look. |

Now that I've mentioned art I have to say that Mike Mignola's "Gotham by Gaslight" is something to see, sort of 'graphic novel noire', brilliant story too!

Seems to be quite a few "Great Bat Books". I find myself having to force myself away from the Batman heavy shelves in "Room 237" (my favouritest comic shop) and trying to find something else to read. It is almost certain that a Gotham centric book is going to be amazing so I do pick them up every couple of months but I do try some indies and other companies than DC and Marvel regularly. I was having a debate in Room 237 the other day about the big two, Marvel and DC and I think that we decided that in general, up to a certain point, Marvel had the best stories until the mid to late 1980s and then, when the big collectors market opened up, Marvel started going for the money with crossovers and alternative covers. DC did too for a while and then they started getting savvy and getting better writers to write gripping story arcs. '60s and '70s Marvel ruled the roost and now DC are giving the fans what they want.
