SHAM031 / SHAM201 – Cannibal Holocaust: The Blu-Ray and DVD Specs

CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST

THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL FILM EVER MADE, NOW ON BLU-RAY FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER AND FEATURING A BRAND NEW EDIT BY DIRECTOR RUGGERO DEODATO.

Described by Film Threat in a Five Star review as “excellent… legendary… there’s no other film like it… there never will be”, director Ruggero Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust remains one of the most shocking and controversial films of all time. Now, for the first time ever and exclusively for Shameless Screen Entertainment, Deodato has revisited his classic of horror cinema to produce a brand new Director’s Edit of the film especially for its High Definition debut on Blu-ray.

This new Director’s Edit, which removes or partially hides several instances of animal slaughter, will be released as a special Blu-ray and as two-disc DVD edition that includes both the new version and the original version of Cannibal Holocaust, along with a host of extras specially commissioned for this release.

In a statement issued expressly for this new edit made for Shameless explaining the artistic decision to re-edit the film, Deodato says, “At the time, I would have preferred not to kill the animals during the making of the film, but this was requested by the producers. We’d sent them some early dailies and they kept calling us on set in the jungle asking us to shoot increasingly bloody scenes.

“I would not change anything to the film, its structure and content, aside from the fact that, now – thirty years later – I’ve reassessed the way the animals were dealt with. Now I would not do it.”

An extremely violent and gory film, containing strong sex, sexual violence and animal slaughter, Cannibal Holocaust is a powerful and provocative work concerning a crew of documentary filmmakers who go missing while filming primitive cannibal tribes deep in the Amazonian rain forest. The horrific footage they shot before disappearing is found by the members of a second expedition who soon discover the horrific truth behind their demise.

“Without doubt deserving of its reputation as one of the most disgusting and nihilistic films ever made [and] easily as shocking today as it was over [thirty years] ago… Cannibal Holocaust is an impressive and surprisingly intelligent film” (Beyond Hollywood.com) with a “raw, undeniable power, which has been imitated, but never quite equalled” (The Digital Fix).

Cannibal Holocaust (cert. 18) will be released on Blu-ray (£24.99) and two-disc DVD (£19.99) by Shameless Screen Entertainment on 26th September 2011.

Special Features:
  • Introduction to the original film by director Ruggero Deodato
.
  • Introduction to the new Director’s Edit by Ruggero Deodato.
  • “Film And Be Damned” – inteview with Ruggero Deodato and actor Carl G. Yorke.
  • “The Long Road Back From Hell” – specially commissioned documentary by Cine Excess featuring Kim Newman, Professor Julian Petley, Professor Mary Wood, Ruggero Deodato, Carl G. Yorke and actress Francesca Ciardi.
  • Theatrical Trailer.
  • Easter Egg.

Really looking forward to this, even though I already own 2 decent uncut DVD's of it!

just placed me preorder for the blu using spare voucher for £12 :)

Rik 2nd September 2011 05:38 PM

It's my first time ordering from them because I've read on here about how slack they are when dispatching stuff, but I couldn't resist for that price, if I get it early then I'm sure I'll use them again

I've pre-ordered it from The Hut but, as they are the same company and presumably use the same warehouse, I'm not holding my breath!

Good call on getting Kim Newman for the documentary. I could listen to him read the phonebook.

So could I. He knows his stuff and put his points across eloquently and with passion.

While I'm waiting for this release, I'm currently working my way through the Grindhouse Films DVD, getting ready to see what it's like in HD and what difference they'll be.

I'm interested to hear his take on this, seeing as he gave a pretty bad review of Deodato's Last Cannibal World(and all the Italian cannibal films TBH), in the Eaten Alive! book. He even says and I quote "I can leave Last Cannibal World behind and never have to think about any of these films again", that is until somebody pays me for a documentary ha ha

What's the language specs on this?

Any hope the German dub finds its way on this release (Thanks again for including it on the NYR SE, so I simply HAD TO ask!:clap:)?

robw285 3rd September 2011 12:12 PM

Does anyone know the running time of the new documentary

Rik 3rd September 2011 12:43 PM

I've just pre-ordered the dvd from Amazon for £9.99, cheapest I've seen it and it's the first time I've double dipped on the same release, I'm certain it'll be worth it :)

Sarah@Cult Labs 15th September 2011 12:49 PM

For those who've been asking, the special features will be in 1080p.

The Road Back from Hell documentary is exactly 40 minutes and 20 seconds long.

As Sarah said, it's also in 1080p high definition.

Any language specs?

Didn't Jason J. Slater write the above tome? Maybe you were thinking of Newman's Nightmare Movies instead?

I'm looking forward to the Shameless CH DVD and BR popping through my letterbox in due course. I just hope the council contractors imminently renovating our flat don't have light fingers and watch where they're stepping!

I'll still be buying Grindhouse Releasing's U.S. HD edition though to see what packaging and extras Sage Stallone and Bob Murawski cook up.:)

Has the Blu-Ray region coding been confirmed? I'm hoping it's region free.

I've already seen it twice in HD and I'm writing my review at the moment, but Zavvi has also shipped my copy so I look forward to seeing the artwork and the complete package.

Baseball Fury 22nd September 2011 05:11 PM

Mine'll come whenever Sarah sticks it in the post! haha

BAKA 23rd September 2011 12:26 PM

Arrived this morning, just in time for the weekend. I was quite disappointed that there was no little booklet though. It's only my third Shameless release, and I was under the impression they all came with a little booklet, but clearly I was wrong! After all the Special Edition talk, it would have been nice to at least have that, since the SE was nixed. I think I prefer the disc's face design more than both covers if I'm honest:

( Thankfully mine's already been shipped ) :tongue1:

napalm-in-the-morning 24th September 2011 09:21 AM

Booklet?

Still waiting for my Blu despite owning three other versions!! But out of interest does it contain a booklet or not? Seems to be conflicting info on its inclusion?

My DVD and BR copies too which also came the back end of last week. However, with our flat currently occupied with council contractors and seething with still-settling concrete dust i've decided to keep my CH purchases boxed and concealed for now. The main thing is both items are here now just waiting to be opened and inspected by my dry hands at a later date.:)

Mine didn't and there is no mention of one on the rear cover.

djvaso 25th September 2011 10:16 AM

I don't understand one thing: the difference in audio and subtitle specifications between Blu-ray and DVD. The omission of Italian audio (and English subtitles) on Blu-ray is inexcusable for me  .

Agreed. Really disapointed. Also a bit let down that there was no commentary on the new re-edit. Surely this could have been possible when Deodato was supervising the HD transfer and colour balances, etc? Was this just a case of there not being enough of the budget left? I think a commentary would have pushed sales considerably here and abroad and the very fact of this being a new cut would have given plently of content. If not a commentary maybe a text essay of Deodato's thoughts on the new cut, etc.

Rik 25th September 2011 02:36 PM

Received my copy on Friday, been busy all weekend so I haven't had chance to check it out yet, and still no confirmation from Amazon about the dispatch of my DVD copy
