Default Question about CH BluRay and Shameless in general...

Hey folks,

Taking the CH BluRay as an example, from amazon UK, what exactly does this mean:

Special Features

- Original long version of the film (only 14 secs cut which has been seamless replaced by reaction shots)

Uuuh. "only 14 secs cut which has been seamless replaced with REACTION SHOTS". Now, firstly, this is confusing, it doesn't say wheater the release is uncut or not, and furthermore, what the heck is "replaced with reaction shots"?

Also, i'm wondering how cut shameless' releases are in general? I don't mean to be a bitch about things, but it IS a U.K. label (and we all know UK releases - from whatever label - is almost always cut...or at least HAS BEEN so up until now).

There's a few VERY interesting titles put out by Shameless, but they're very, very cheap on i.e. amazon, and even THAT makes me suspicious.

How's their expertese when it comes to restoring vault material? Up to par with BU, Raro, NoShame (R.I.P.), MYA Communications etc? (I personally work with restoring old films for the swedish film institute, so i believe i'm "pickier" than most when it comes to a/v quality).

I hope i'm wrong with my scepticism, and i do hope the titles i'm gonna buy (i WILL buy a few, just to check (and i will probably scrutinise every concievable part of the DVD - everything from eviidence of what resizing-choices used to evidence of what encoding program used to possible structure errors), and since they're not super-expensive...well...)

But...can anyone just quickly shed a light on the two main questions here:
-Is ANY of the releases Shameless has put out cut, and;
-What do they mean by "replaced by reaction shots" in the case of the CH BluRay?

Cheers!

1. 14 second's cut is fine. Excelent in fact. I wouldn't have it any other way. The Muskrat killing is botched, and unlike the other's (which are classed as slaughter) was prolonged and painful for the creature. Where all better off without that scene in our life's. This is the revisited Theatrical cut on the disk.
The director's cut removes ALL animal slaughter ( Deodate having express disspleasure at having been forced by producers to include it) so it's my favoured off the two cut's though, as none of the killing's beside's the Muskrat death scene are actualy 'cruelty' more 'slaughter', both are within the BBFC's regulations. The replaced riaction shot's are seamless transition's from the cut scene's to what happened before/ after the even't, so a few second's extra where snipped to make the transition less jummpy. Good move on there part, I can live without seeing a dodgy jump cut after watching....sorry, not watching Muskrat snuff.

2. The restoration is astounding! In general there BD's are on par with Raro and supersede Synapse and Blue Underground. DVD transer's do vary though stuff like Femina Ridens, Le Orme, Dont Torture a Duckling, and Almnost Human are near BD quality.

3. Beside's the 14 second's of cut's from CH, for some unexplicable reason, Venus in Furs is still cut by 1m, The New York Ripper BD and DVD (Fan Edition) by 29s, and The House on the Edge of the Park by 42s. Also there three Sexploitation titles lack the XXX material but only Sleazy Pete is missing them.
DONT BLAME THIS ON SHAMELESS! They try there absolute hardest to provide the fan's with amazing edition's of movie's fan's love.

I've seen the XXX versions of BEAST IN SPACE and SATAN'S BABY DOLL so I don't mind. There are no known H/C inserts for LOVE GODDESS OF THE CANNIBALS and with the brief extra 5 secs or so, Shameless edition is the longest version available.

Other Shameless titles like OASIS OF FEAR and RATMAN look like crap but that's due to the negatives being in really bad shape rather than cheap mastering on Shameless's part.

Yeah, I hear the transition to H/C scene's in Beast in Space is quite jarring. Not interested really, I want to watch porn i'll watch bloody porn!

The Ratman and Oasis of Fear transfer's are indeed subpar, but very much our of Shameless's control.

You see, this is exactly what I was saying on another thread about the dangers of perpetuating the 'nasties' scandal. Because the term is still thrown about people are still under the impression everything coming out of the UK is cut.

Let me stress that very little gets cut by the BBFC these days and has been that way for years. It's not a given that just because it's a UK release it must be a censored version.

CH is cut by 14 secs. Those 14 secs have been replaced with alternate shots so as to retain the original running time (presumably so that commentaries don't go out of synch).

Indeed. Shameless have released almost 40 titles and only 3 were cut by the BBFC.

Arrow have put around 60 and only 2 are cut (BARE BEHIND BARS, THE COMMANDER)

You have, although a tough watch it's a very important film in the horror genre, you really need to see it at least once, even in a edited version.
