Bit of lame ego-boosting here but thought I'd might as well post my views on the BBFC as read out by Mark Kermode on his BBC video blog

edit: ah it's at 2:30. you can't link to a mid-point in a video on here apparently.

He is pretty honest and insightful as far as the BBFC are concerned and often praises them for their honest classification. I do wonder if he, as a huge horror fan himself, agrees with my point?

He probably does but Mark knows only too well why the BBFC cut films for adults and why they will continue to do so.

Nice to hear that from Mark. The BBFC would be making a huge blunder if they were to start getting stricter again on violence.

A question... What are the chances of me getting into bother importing uncensored/banned films that the BBFC have rejected/cut. That includes the likes of both the old (Cannibal Ferox, House on the Edge of the Park) and the new (A Serbian Film, The Bunny Game). Now I know many of you do indeed import without any trouble, but I'm just being cautious. Especially with the newer ones, where i've heard you have greater chances of getting the unwanted attention of customs.

I have never had any problems buying them from abroad. It could just be random checks on packages where some people are caught out.

It also begs the question whether customs even know which films have been banned in their uncut form over here... my guess is that they wouldn't know for sure.

Like Nos, I've never had any problems importing (except from having to pay duty! )

A while ago, Mizpol put a post on Facebook saying a package from abroad had been seized because of its 'obscene content'. He didn't say what all of the DVDs were, but does he did identify were still on the 'banned list' and definitely would have caught attention. However, he appealed and managed to get most of them back from Customs.

If I ever went to court because I got caught, I would just show them Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship and Media. I think that would help my case.

How is the law on these nasties in the UK anyhow? I wonder, because I know nothing about it, is possession forbidden?

In germany it is tough and weird on the same sheet, all behind a banner of youth protection, but why do they even cut the highest rated films? I think it is an excuse to censor stuff, which is forbidden officially... The real bad films are the ones that have been confiscated by a court, but when the reason was violence and not any criminal content (like child pornography) you are allowed to own them, even bring them with you from a vacation, what is prohibited is the sale of these and so you may face problems if you have more than one copy of the same film, as they may state you wanted to sell them... The online purchase is problematic as the seller breaks the law and there are cases where films are confiscated as item of proof of a possible hearing (which never happens if the seller is outside the country. I had 4 DVDs snatched, but no further things happened after that, I could even have filed a complaint and might have got them, but I was younger and did not know and just wanted to keep a low profile...
