It wasn't. The version that was submitted to the BBFC for the UK DVD was a European Pay Per View version which already had some of the gore removed. The full versions broadcast on FX weren't submitted but I very much doubt they'd have been cut.

I read through the BBFC's research document and found it to be an appalling piece of research as the 'pool' is far too small to gain any findings representative of the British public as a whole. Also, the leading questions, research subjects who were bored to the point of falling asleep and panels where the BBFC 'researchers' really got the answers they were looking for. This created a sham piece of data acquisition, so any change in policy based on those findings should be challenged in a court of law.

Ah right, I just assumed the versions on FX were cut too, I didn't watch them at the time but picked up the UK BD and read here that it was cut

Yeah they are all passed without BBFC cuts as, for some reason, the pre-cut Pay TV versions were submitted. Someone really dropped the ball there

This answer regarding the violence towards women in The Killer Inside Me is ace.

I'm just dissecting the report now and making the odd comment about it on here.

Several of the participants enjoyed Martyrs.

Those that could stay awake or weren't confused by Antichrist thought it was also quite acceptable.

I'm not even going to read it, I'm already wound up enough without that adding fuel to the fire

On The Human Centipede 2.

[Participants described that the film stayed with them after watching, with one
participant even finding herself jumping when she saw a centipede in her garden]
.

You couldn't make it up really.

The report Paul posted earlier talks about this but it needed posting here as well.

On Grotesque.

[Many participants found this a difficult film to follow, partly due to the
Japanese context and language (the film is subtitled)]

Beggars belief.
