Confessions of A Pop Performer.(1975)

The second in the series of films about the amorous adventures of Timothy Lea played again by the cherubic Robin Askwith (well he was when he was young in the 1970s,anyway).Timmy is dragged into the world of show business by is ever bullying brother in-law played by TV son-in law for hire Antony Booth as the hilariously named Sidney Noggett…(must of cost him a fortune getting his stationary and signs changed every time he starts a new business venture).As with the previous film we have Bill Maynard as Mr Lea (was Bill ever young?) and Sheila White as Sidney's long suffering wife, but also very funny Rosie Noggett. The main difference this time is that Dandy Nichols was replaced by On The Buses matriarch Doris Hare, who must have had a sense of déjÃ* vu as her role in the Confessions movies is exactly the same as On the Buses only with less nudity, not her of course but her screen son, I doubt many people would of paid good money to see Reg Varneys backside even in in the mid 1970s.Obviously plot wise we are not talking Gone with The Wind here,everything centres around Sidney and Timmy managing a pub rock band called Kipper, and hilarity ensues and copious amounts of simulated sex, which is mainly shots of Askwiths bottom and torso gyrating against some poor naked actress. Actually this is my favourite in the series, and it has some genuinely funny moments, mostly centred around the relationship and the squabbling of the family, in fact if you took out all the smut you would have the basis of a great sitcom, as Maynard and Hare have a great chemistry together and Shelia White as Mrs Nogget has some marvellous digs at her husbands expense.For me its actually Bill Maynard who steals the film for me,coming back from his lost property job dressed as a gorilla is hilarious and he has a great lovely monologue about his newly born grandson, although obviously it ends on a crude not, but marvellous stuff all the same. This is a must for fans of 1970s un pc comedy, and although an 18 cert its mild by todays standards. OH and the music is pretty good to, check out Kipper doing the Clapham song,im sure its on You Tube somewhere.

Have you ever wondered what a British sex comedy would be like if it was directed by someone like Ken Loach, no neither have
I,but if the Socialist misery guts ever did it would probably resemble something like Pete Walkers Cool It Carol from 1970.I was only really familiar with Mr Walkers grimy British horror movies and of course these are full of sexually repressed nutters eating ,beating and generally being beastly to the likes of Manuel from Fawlty Towers and and PC Rosie from err Rosie. But had not really paid any attention to the likes of his Four Dimensions of Greta (1972) and Tiffany Jones (1973) . Cool It, Carol! (1970) was apparently based on a true life story that used to emblazon the front covers of the tabloids on a Sunday morning, you know the type of thing, Vicar marries goat ,my hamster eat Freddie Starr that kind of thing.Robin Askwith and Janet Lynn escape there boring hum drum existence, he a butchers delivery driver and she a petrol pump attendant..(remember them),and while she was a winner in a local beauty pageant the most exciting thing Askwith character sees is his employers son chop his finger off,( well it is a Pete Walker film)..So off they run to the big city of London, which isn't so much paved with gold but pimps ,pornographers and dirty old men, in fact they do not seem to come across any one who isn't in the smut game one way or another. Any how they become rich and infamous. For a sex comedy. I was assuming it was mainly going on the frivolous poster art work on the dvd cover, but it was more like a kitchen sink drama ,that Britain churned out in the 1960s..Still its an interesting time capsule of England back in the early 70s and Robin Askwith and Janet Lynn make for a likeable if naïve couple, also the ending is not what I was expecting, and maybe one of the best film endings since Kaufmans Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) ….

Cool it Carol is an excellent film, i've only seen it once, when i bought the dvd a couple of years ago so must give it a rewatch.

Have you seen Monique, from the same Slap and Tickle range, Inspector?

Like Cool it Carol it's never seen a sex comedy but it is a highly recommended drama.

Cool it Carol is my first bit of slap and tickle, I was a virgin up until then.....

If you are going to seek the rest out. I did, a couple of years ago, went through the book Keeping the British End Up and bought as many as i could find (Could have sworn you bought the book before me actually).

Emmanuelle In Soho is easily the worst (Not that the rest are what you would call great films ) so i'd leave that until last if i were you.

Yeah that is a great book. And I did check out a few reviews in there.next up is the Adventures of series...

Adventures of a Plumber's Mate...(1978)
The third in this series, and as before Christopher Neil is Bob West sorry Sid South ..(Christ who came up with that) as opposed to Barry Evans as Joe North in the first entry. Am I missing something here, because if you took the poster at face value you would be expecting a rather ruder carry on movie, laughs galore and double entendre a plenty. Unfortunately this series seems to of been the elephants graveyard for out of work tv actors of the time, and future Z-list celebrities.. So if its humour your after then I'm afraid The Adventures series is about as funny as the proverbial fire in an orphanage, in fact it resembles in tone and filmic style an episode of a 70s British cop show or Tv drama of the time..Christopher Neil who replaced Barry Evans in the second film Adventures of a Private Eye, lacks any of the charm or charisma of the cheeky Robin Askwith of the confessions series which these films so badly try to emulate...There is a slew of familiar faces including Stephen Lewis ,Christopher Biggins Elaine Paige and William Rushton to name a few, obviously times were hard for actors back in the 1970s as they had to take work where they could find it. But there is a plus to these movies, because if your a fan of 1970s nostalgia then you will get some joy out of the fashions, cars and a time of innocence before bloody mobile phones and the internet..
