Taking a different turn.

I love movies where the location is a character in it's own right.

Like Don't Look Now, which could be based anywhere but Venice, Amsterdamned isn't the chosen location because it makes for a good video sleeve pun, the water logged city is essential to the film's style and plot.

The dinky size of the cop cars during the chase scenes is dictated by the narrow, winding roads and the heart stopping boat pursuit are completely dictated by the setting. Brilliant!

I've been to the city myself, which leads me to the next point.

Isn't it great when you've spent time in a place and then you see a film that's intimately bound to that location. It certainly adds an extra edge to the proceedings. The gory moment when the body smears itself over the roof of a glass topped tourist boat sent a chill through me because I've been on a similar tour.

In general, the film evokes the sleazy night time underbelly of the city that I saw the merest glimpse of when I visited. A trip to New York two years ago was so inspiring that even if You Got Mail comes on the TV, I have a sneaky glance to see if I've stood in any of the locations.

Spot on Sam the City as in DON'T LOOK NOW,or WHO SAW HER DIE? contributes as much to the film as all the other elements does.

I know everyone on here is a sucker for old video and poster art so I put together a nicely crackly little slide show to showcase some of the Amsterdamned images I dug up from the web.

Have a look and tell us what you think...

Amsterdamned hits UK stores and online retailers today.

Let us know what you think of the film and disc!

My local HMV store had no copies of Amsterdamned on the shelves today.

That's disappointing - I remember when I ran a rental business in Glasgow - most nights the Amsterdamned tape was out for rent and that was the mid to late 90s!

I supplied tapes to some grocery stores - most went to the shop underneath my flat in Hyndland Street.

Ah right.Hyndland street-know it well.
DeCourcey's arcade was a goldmine for deleted VHS's!

Obviously Dick Maas has a good Glaswegian fanbase!

Amsterdamned is definetly worth seeking out!
