Default Favourite British Gangster/crime film

The old British gangster/crime film eh?
It's been on the go for decades, but in recent times every other film that is produced in the UK seems to be a crook film.
Some are good, some destined to be modern classics and some are just bloody terrible.

So 'ave a butcher's and let us know what you fink guv!

Get Carter is one of my all-time fave films. I used to have a DVD of it, but lent it to someone who never returned it...and I can't remember who!

The Long Good Friday
is great stuff as well and I was blown away by the quality of the exceptional Gangster No 1.

GET CARTER's top of the pops for me as well.
Caine's performance even to this day mesmerises me.Top notch stuff.
The bleak and dreary Newcastle locations are used to startling effect.

Close runners up would be Apted's THE SQUEEZE and Mackenzie's THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY.

A who's who of British character actors and nasty turns by Stephen Boyd and David Hemmings make this a winner.Like GET CARTER,the London locales are shown to be grubby desolate places, part of the 'charm' of the Brit crime flick.
Oh and Stacy Keach makes a very convincing alcoholic ex-copper.

THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY is another classic.as is Hoskin's other one,MONA LISA.
Originally to be titled 'The Paddy Factor'! The Long Good Friday still packs a punch to this day.

Other crackers are ;
Richard Burton's turn in VILLAIN (Based methinks on Ronnie Kray)

McGuigan's GANGSTER NO.1-Violent,funny and has a good soundtrack.

Jonathan Glazer's SEXY BEAST Produced a startling performance from Ben Kingsley-Who wasn't shocked when he went off on one?

Long Good Friday tops any list, I think.

Yeah, that's great, too...

"I know a bloke who knows a bloke who knows a bloke. You know this bloke.
This is a bloke you know."

Genius!

Get Carter is right up there on my list though my all-time favourite Brit gangster film is the brilliant Performance. Even today it's one bizarre movie.

Yeah,I hated PERFORMANCE when I first saw it on video long ago.
But since revisiting it on DVD it has grown on me.

It does take several viewings to get there but leaves an impact when it does.

Forgotten about that! I used to love that film! Burton wears a pair of the coolest kitsch shades ever captured on film and poor Lovejoy looks quite uncomfortable as a gangster's catamite - "I need yer, Wolf!" Hahahaha!

Good film. You have made me want to see it again...is it out on DVD?

Big fan of Performance too - amazing stuff.
