For me Straw Dogs is really Peckinpah's great masterpiece...that and Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. I much prefer Straw Dogs to The Wild Bunch. It's interesting that Straw Dogs is filed under Horror in the back of the Time Out Film Guide - it might seem a bit of a stretch, but I think the film fits in well with the tradition of Witchfinder General, Wicker Man, Blood on Satan's Claw and Living Dead at Manchester Morgue - films that used the British landscape in a very sinister way...

Yours truly may be a tad behind the times here but can anybody please confirm the U.K. SD BR features the extended cut of the film as per MGM's U.S. variant? I was intending to buy the latter release until i discovered the British HD version is a fully-loaded edition.

It's a pity the Blu didn't include this 2003 doc...

Mantrap Straw Dogs: The Final Cut
Runtime: 56 mins.

Director: Paul Joyce
Cast: Sam Peckinpah, Dustin Hoffman, Susan George, David Warner, Mark Kermode

Description: To accompany the UK terrestrial television premiere (August 2003) of Peckinpahs' seminal classic, Channel 4 commissioned documentary maker Paul Joyce (director of the definitive Peckinpah study Man of Iron ) and Mark Kermode to track down the film's key players including leading actors Dustin Hoffman and Susan George, and re-visit the scene of one of cinema's most notorious crimes. What they found was a film which, according to Susan George, 'lives in my mind like a dream', a traumatic and troubling work the madness of which still haunts all those involved and still arouses admiration and outrage in equal measure.

The UK disc can have all the extras it wants, but if the print of the film itself is shit quality I won't be buying it. US edition for me, I'm afraid. What a missed opportunity.
