Jim Thompson and James Ellroy are two of my favorites but I don't find any of the films made from their books to be anything special. I like Dashiell Hammet and the two films made from his books Maltese Falcon and Miller's Crossing. I actually worked for a company that acquired Pinkerton's. So though I can't say that I worked for the same company as Hammet I did work for a company for which it was a susidiary.
