Brighton Rock (1947 directed by John Boulting
Brighton Rock (1947 directed by John Boulting A prime example of British noir at its best, and definitely one of the best British films made,(this is only my opinion of course) The combination of such a terrific story by Graham Greene(Third Man) and an outstanding British cast makes it a joy to watch.Richard Attenborough as Pinkie is so mesmerizing showing a great performance at such an early stage in his career is astonishing. The story to is a great concept mixing who dunnit with revenge, betrayal and redemption of some sorts.Apart from Attenborough there's a rather roguish William Hartnell as Dallow, looking very daper as Pinkie's 2nd in command. But its Rose Brown played by Carol Marsh who gives the film its heart, her love for Pinkie and her denial of his evil side realy pulls at the heart strings, and the ending where she re-plays a record Pinkie recorded a message on for her, only for it to stick at a crucial moment would make the toughest private eye cry.Im gonna repeat my self and say this is a great film and wonderfully realised by John Boulting. out of 5

Confession time! I've never seen Brighton Rock. Even bigger confession time! I do own the remake and liked that though. I imagine it's now time for me to take a walk down a mean street. |

The remake is very good, but the original is a masterpiece.

I've never seen the remake so can't comment. I've only seen the original once when I was a lot younger and can recall not being overly fussed with it... obviously I need to reappraise it now I'm older and er, wiser(?) so have added it to my Love Film list. |

Kiss of Death (1947)
Kiss of Death (1947) Victor Mature is Nick Bianco another loser petty criminal who gets shot by the police after a bungled robbery on xmas eve.Brian Donlevy (Mr Quatermass) is Assistant District Attorney Louis D'Angelo who tries to get nick to grass on his accomplices for a lighter sentence. There's lots of arm bending by Donlevy to try and get Mature's Bianco to testify its only when he finds out that his wife and two kids were not looked after by his lawyer and the rest of the gang in fact his wife commits suicide worrying over money and the kids are put into a home.Bianco meets Tommy Udo( Richard Widmark) a rather disturbed and violent gangster.I have to say the plot is thicker than my old mum's gravy and just as bleak.Poor old Nick Bianco is really put through the ringer and especially when Udo is looking to kill Bianco for suspecting him off betraying him.Kiss of Death has an unusual feel almost documentary in style due to all the locations including interior shots being in real locales. Both Mature and Widmark are very good and Donlevy is his usual gruff self but none the worse for that.Overall a great film, and slightly different in style to most noirs's.Checkout the killing of the old woman in the wheel chair by Tommy Udo,a total nuter. out 5
