Default The Windmill Massacre

The Windmill Massacre (2016)

A tour bus breaks down out in the back woods of Holland whilst looking at rural windmills. Unfortunately for the mixed group of tourists they have broken down next to an old windmill where legend has it the miller used to worship the devil...

The film, from the makers of 2013's Frankenstein's Army, tries to be different and by and large succeeds. I wasn't too complimentary the first time i watched this in early December mainly due to it not satisfying my own demands or expectations of what i thought should happen. However on a second viewing i have to admit i was quite impressed. Rather than it being all about a bunch of victims who are mercilessly slaughtered, in other words your bog standard slasher movie, The Windmill Massacre gives all the characters a back story which we gradually learn about as the film develops. Everyone on the tour bus is there because in the past they did something wrong for which they have yet to be punished.

The film is more complex and intriguing than many in this field and has a diverse cast of characters from all walks of life. From a Royal Marine to a nanny, they are all wrong doers although we don't know this initially.

When the film hits slasher territory it excels. The slayings are brutal and uncompromising yet original in their delivery to boot. From head crushing to disembowelment they are a lot of fun and we also get a new meaning to the term 'legless'.

The Dutch locations and especially the creaky old windmill that slowly comes back to life as more wrongdoers are executed gives the film a lot of originality and was one of the reasons i wanted to see the film in the first place, and the demonic, scythe brandishing miller is a remorseless killer i hope we catch up with again.

I do feel as if i can go into some films almost blinkered and it was the case with The Windmill Massacre, but that second viewing was necessary in this case for me to really appreciate this as an original horror film and one i would now recommend.

It's very high on my 'to watch' pile – I may move it right to the top based on your positive views.

Excellent review, Dem!

I really enjoyed The Windmill Massacre too - it had an old-school slasher feel to it. A slasher movie done well with a very creepy looking killer.
