Same when I rented the VHS of Cronenberg's Crash from Blockbusters when it came out, the guy serving me looked at me and said something along the lines of "So you're renting Crash eh, you sick or summat?", I replied with "Yes thanks" and walked out, his face was a picture

Ha, I remember joking to my young Nephew about Texas Chainsaw Massacre being a comedy (It is funny in places at least)
when he was looking at DVDs in a shop, only to turn around to some woman giving me the evil eye!

I remember getting similarly funny looks from the shop assistants in HMV when buying Land of the Dead, The Devil's Rejects and Switchblade Romance in their three DVDs for twenty quid offer a few years ago.

I'd have told them that if they thought those were bad, they have no business in a place like that, and would be better off working in Macdonalds!

Back in the day of buying video cassettes I ordered a sell thru tape of David Cronenberg's Shivers in Boots.

I received the usual phone call to say that the tape was there to be picked up only to be greeted at the counter by the shop assistant saying that she had taken it upon herself to watch the first 10 mins of the tape and found the content to be vile and sickening.

I don't to this day know what was more disturbing, her taste in films or the fact that they were obviously allowing their staff to watch ordered tapes before giving them to the people who paid for them.

That's nothing, some years back I remember ordering VHS tapes of Mark of the Devil and Zombie Holocaust from abroad only to have them seized by UK customs. They sent me a rather nasty letter saying if I tried to get them back I could be prosecuted, as both titles were deemed obscene.I hadn't even seen the film's at the time so didn't know how ridiculously tame they were. So, I didn't try to get them back and as far as I know they were destroyed (but more likely they ended up in a customs officer's own video collection). The point is though, is that I was made to feel as if I was ordering child porn and not the two cheesy old horror films we know and love.

same thing happened to me only with a US tape of Driller Killer.

I bet those customs boys amassed quite a collection of free horror tapes back in the day

Guess I'm the odd one out here then: I bought the likes of House on the Edge of the Park and Cannibal Holocaust (shameless editions) from my local HMV and none of the nearby staff cared! Usually a couple of them that I talk to just engage me in friendly conversation about my purchases. In fact, the only time I remember a negative reaction was when I bought The first two Bronx Warriors and the "Fulci box of terror" boxset where they said "You've picked the worst ones available".
