The House That Freddy Built (2006) 22 min. / * *
This is more or less an extended New Line Horror advertisement. Lots of people who were involved in the production of A Nightmare On Elm Street say a few words. The problem is – nobody speaks more than one sentence at a time, and the film excerpts are equally short and pretty dull. This featurette may be interesting for newbies, as quite a few films are mentioned. There’s nothing new for Horror freaks, though.

Never Sleep Again: The Making of A Nightmare on Elm Street (2006) 50 min. / * * *
This short documentary is much better. It is still cut in a very modern way (i.e. way too fast) but this time it’s less extreme. The production of this classic Horror film is covered in an entertaining if slightly superficial way. Apart from John Saxon and Johnny Depp, most important people from the film talk about their respective roles. Unfortunately, this documentary does not include the opinions of film historians or other experts – which, once more, makes it look a little bit like an ad for the film from time to time. Still very good.

Night Terrors: The Origins of Wes Craven’s Nightmares (2006) 16 min. / * * *
A short but interesting featurette about the phenomenon of nightmares. Includes a narrator and short statements from experts (including David J. Skal). Worth watching.
(A Nightmare On Elm Street UK Warner Blu-ray)

‘Halloween’: A Cut Above The Rest (2003) 87 min. / * * * ½
Produced for the 25th anniversary of the original Halloween film, this feature-length documentary is very well-made. A narrator leads us through the film which covers all steps from the writing till the final distribution of the film. Film buffs may know most of what is said and shown, but watching this extended making-of is nevertheless a diverting way to spend the afternoon. Recommended.
(Halloween 25th Anniversary Edition UK/US Anchor Bay DVDs, Halloween UK/US Starz/Anchor Bay Blu-rays)

Celluloid Crime of the Century (2003) 40 min. / * * ½
A short documentary covering the production of Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left. Apart from the film’s two terrorised ladies, all the important guys (including an incredibly silly Fred J. Lincoln, and a funny David Hess) explain a few things that you may not have known yet. Like the original film, the production of this short documentary is pretty cheap and simple. Still worth watching.
(The Last House On The Left UK Metrodome DVD, The Last House On The Left US MGM Region-free Blu-ray)

The Ginger Baker doc "Beware Mr Baker" will stay with you, genius drummer, pure scum at being human. Endlessly fascinating.

He has done loads on various subjects and is worth looking into.

If you like drugs, violence and sport then "The Smashing Machine" about mixed martial artist Mark Kerr is good as it chronicles his rise and fall both in and out of the cage. Brutal in it's honesty.
