Typical boring 70's kitchen sink drama with Vietnam excerpts. In my opinion it's dreary and i wouldn't ever watch it again.

The Russian Roulette sequence is a fantastic piece of film making but the rest of the film less so.

Think I might see if I can cancel it,really don't want to watch a 3 hour kitchen sink drama

Don't just take my word for it though. Plenty of people think it's great.

For someone like yourself who only keeps things until they watch them i'd get a cheaper bluray rather than spending a fortune on something that may not be easy to sell again. Or maybe it will.

Maybe even get a cheap dvd, or watch it on Prime, see if you like it then spend £27 on the collectible version.

The first hour is just a very drawn out wedding scene with everyone drunk and shouting a lot.

Reading reviews that aren't 8-10s i have a fee!ing i won't, seems a films with a few outstanding scenes and great acting but that's it and it's a hour to long.

It's included in prime so I'll watch it on that and make up my mind.

Hey guys, need some advice.

I was hoping to grab the first Suzuki set from Arrow on Ebay in an auction for 30 quid but got pipped at the last second by another bidder.

Seeing as it is 50 quid on Amazon and Vol 2 is 35 quid, I can only afford to get one atm.

If I like Branded to Kill and Detective Bureau, which one should I get?

Volume 2 is the crime films, the 1st set is really good, but they are juvenile delinquent films and a musical(ish)!

I admit I haven't seen it in a long time but I remember thinking it was brilliant. Can't deny it's a bit slow going at times though.

Agreed, the opening goes on a bit too long, but once your past it. It gets better

Think that's the main problem was nearing an hour when I switched off and the opening was still going, very poor editing

I think it's a superbly made film, from the incredibly powerful central performances to all the technical aspects, from the cinematography to the editing, the production design to the score.

The only thing I don't like about The Deer Hunter is how it is yet another in a long line of films where there is (in a borderline racist way) very little to distinguish between the Vietnamese characters and how the Americans are victims of their own war of aggression.

Might give it another chance but on amazon prime, still going to get rid of the 4k version when it turns up

You'll notice Nos says it's a superbly made film but he doesn't say it's actually any good for entertainment value.

Just pre-ordered this from zavvi. Shame there's no ultra 4k version.

Justin101 24th August 2018 01:22 PM

Oh I am tempted! Discovery is one of the best shows I've seen in a while :)
I think that there is a 4K coming out in the USA, it'll be pricey though.

platostotal 24th August 2018 01:38 PM

The 1970s saw American cinema produce some outstanding films but... prime example being The Deer Hunter, there was a trend after The Godfather to make 'epic' style drama with scenes that seem to on far too long, a couple others that spring to mind.

Day of the Dolphin, beautifully shot drama about intelligent dolphins (one of the only films that put me to sleep in a cinema, might play better on t.v.)

Coming Home, superbly acted drama about Vietnam but God does it drag.

Picked up Police Academy 1-7 on Blu for a princely £4.50 from my local charity shop. Ive only seen the first but heard the sequels are wretched. Kind of looking forward to seeing how bad they are.

Second is just as good as the first , thirds ok but they went downhill when Guttenberg left, but still some fun to be had.

The first couple of sequels aren't necessarily terrible but once you hit 4 or 5 (can't remember which was worst) then the shit hits the fan

I suppose I was replying more to the point about the editing and the earlier post about the film being boring. It's not one I would watch for some light viewing in the evening to unwind, but even though it's not a particularly pleasant experience, I do find it an engrossing and compelling watch.

Finally took the plunge on the Australian Death Wish 4/5 blu-ray. I’m not a fan at all of double features, especially when they just use art from one of the films (like this one), but the commentaries with Paul Talbot swayed me.
