They also call trousers 'pants' in Northern England, South Africa, and Australia. Trousers is a word primarily and almost exclusively used in the south of England. I have a South African friend who moved over to Surrey to work and study for a few years. On moving she walked into M&S and asked a sales assistant to show her where the pants were. Imagine her horror when he led her into the lingerie section. |

I know Northern England is a big place and I only live in one small part of it, but I've never met anyone who referred to trousers as pants. I knew a South African woman who had lived here for a few years and she still called them pants, though I suspect she knew exactly what to say in shops!
