Completely agree. It's a scathing commentary on office politics, and one of the greatest comedies Hollywood has ever produced.

Also, Shirley MacLaine has never been cuter!

I did, but haven't played in years.

In terms of the humour, I don't know if it is laugh out loud funny – it's different to Some like It Hot; it's more gentle and sentimental.

I wasn't impressed. It was so downbeat.
You've just listed a major contributing factor of what makes it so good.

A shame you didn't like it Dem - it's a prime (and rare) example of a romantic comedy that I can actually stomach.

I suppose it is downbeat, but it feels real, inasmuch you know those situations really existed (and probably still exist in offices around the world), and that's why I think it's a great film.

It's definitely one of my all-time favourite romantic comedies.

Indeed - most romantic comedies are saccharin bullshit, The Apartment just feels more 'real', yet at the same time blends the comedy elements with its downbeat core exceptionally well.

Back in the glory days of Hollywood great romantic comedies were easy to find.

To me the final scene where Lemmon and McClaine finally get together seemed almost tacked on to give it a happy ending. They couldn't wait to get The End card onscreen, even before they'd finished speaking.

There are so many better rom coms from those days in my opinion. From Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House to You Can't Take it With You to The Philadelphia Story. Not to mention The Thin Man, Bringing Up Baby and His Girl Friday.

And those are just the tip of the ice berg.

I totally agree about the office politics angle but not about it being an all time great romantic comedy.

I always think it's Teal'c from Stargate replying when you start your sentences with Indeed.
