I thought it was to do with the barcode as well, but to be honest the guys telling you they can't take it probably don't know the reason why they can't and make something up

I took my Superman dvd Collection in there ages ago. Was a limited edition tin from Virgin Megastores. Said they couldn't take it because it didn't have the cardboard wraparound with the barcodes on.

CEX in Chorley had a Danish release of Cannibal Holocaust with 18 cert stickers stuck on. Prestons has the U.S releases of the church and dark night of the scarecrow.

I paid more than £6.00 for it too. As a sweetener, your version has the isolated music track and the UK disc doesn't!
